Staples Shuns Sinclair News

By John Eggerton -- Broadcasting & Cable, 1/4/2005 4:44:00 PM

Office supply products chain Staples confirms that it is pulling its advertising from newscasts on Sinclair Broadcast Group TV stations as of Jan. 10.

Anti-consolidation activist group Media Matters for America was trumpeting the move, attributing it to its campaign against the broadcaster.

According to the e-mail, Staples said: "As a result of Staples' ongoing review of its advertising media activity, Staples will no longer be airing advertising on any Sinclair stations' news programs as of Jan 10, 2005."

Media Matters, with assists from MoveOn.org, MediaChannel and other consolidation foes, launched the SinclairAction.com Web site last month, in part to drum up e-mails to advertisers. The group says it generated over 36,000 e-mails to Staples. Staples spokesman Owen Davis would not say why the company pulled the ads, beyond saying that it was in response to customers who expressed concerns, "some of which may have been aware of the Media Matters campaign."

Davis said national advertising will continue to air in other dayparts on Sinclair stations. He did not know how many of Sinclair's 62 stations were affected or how much the total buy constituted.

The campaign aims to spur action against Sinclair Broadcast Group's 62 television stations for what Media Matters says is "systematically promot[ing] partisan political interests." Of particular concern is a nightly "news and commentary" segment, "The Point," by Sinclair VP Mark Hyman, as well as Sinclair's airing before the election of parts of an anti-Kerry documentary.

Hyman had no comment at press time.

How convenient. That just happens to be the day I stop shopping at Staples.

Still waiting for Staples to reply to my e-mail pointing out that while the Laptop Liberals whine loudly, aside from buying bargains on their website, it's us conservatives who keep their stores alive.

Had they just not advertised, I wouldn't have cared, but they made a point to reply to those who e-mailed to complain, which makes it a political decision.

Then again, Office Depot and Office Max both have much better stores in my area.. I had only been sticking with Staples because of their rewards program. (Whee, $20 back for every $400 I spent... But it did pay for a laser printer at the end of the year.)

With us or against us. They have just sided with socialists whether they were aware of it or not.

That's because the anti-trust division of the Department of Justice during the Clinton administration blocked a merger between Staples and Office Depot. Remember the 2000 DemocRAT convention? It was held in the Staples Center in LA.

Queer, because Mitt Romney, governor of MA, owns a huge part of Staples.
A lot of people who don't know him push Romney as a presidential contender in 2008. He's soft and a country club republican.

Thanks for the quick link.

I have posted them a polite note saying that I won't be shopping with them anymore unless they also withdraw their advertising dollars from CBS, NBC and ABC for THEIR partisan politics. It is a lot farther to the nearest Office Max or Office Depot, but worth the effort.

I haven't shopped with Home Depot since THEY stabbed conservatives in the back.

I just dropped them a missive listing all the stuff I bought there in the last year with the tagline, "You are hereby cordially invited to go pound sand."

A pox on them.

Ditto. Office Depot and Office Max are both closer anyway.

When are these idiots going to learn that taking overtly political actions is going to cost them customers?

I just e-mailed them the following letter.

Dear Staples

Before reading the news release I included at the end of this letter, I thought you would have been above the fray of the political nature. Since you want to get political, I thought to inform you that when I get to work tommorrow, I will be canceling the business account we have with Staples. I will also make sure that I inform as many of my customers, vendors, family and friends of your decision and encourage them to cease business with your organization. We live in a wonderful country where you have the right to make political statements and take action as you have chose to do. The beauty is that so do we, the consumer.

Regards,

my name

Go to their web page and express your outrage, your intention to BOYCOTT and that you'll be asking others to join in a National Boycott

So bowing to leftist pressure on the news that Sinclair was going to show "Stolen Honor" they finally ended up airing what I called "Stolen Hour". Bending over for the libs didn't help them much.

I've read with some chagrin that you are pulling your advertising from Sinclair Media in retribution for their airing certain news programs related to various facts about one of the recent Presidential candidates. Its my belief that facts and knowledge are important to our form of government, no matter how unpleasant those facts may be to the candidate or their supporters. I view your decision as an attempt to influence a news organization to sit on those facts and leave them unreported in fear of monetary loss. This is a disservice to our nation.

As such, I will no longer do business with your company as I often do when I travel. There are plenty of other companies providing the same products and services that do not feel the need to use their influence to supress reporting of matters critical to the public making fully informed political decisions.

You should remember that your advertising is for the purpose of selling your products, not influencing decisions made by our free press. By attempting to do the latter, you have utterly failed in the former.
