School Board Backs Down on Parental Notification Issue

(CNSNews.com) - Concerned citizens packed a Roseville, Calif., hearing room Tuesday night, even though the local school board yanked a controversial "parental consent" item off the agenda earlier in the day.

Many parents worried that the school board would change an existing school policy, which says students may not leave campus for confidential medical appointments or counseling without their parents' knowledge.

According to one witness, the hearing room - with TV cameras rolling -- was packed to overflowing with citizens anxious to speak their minds to members of the Roseville school board.

Board members tried to limit the public comment period to half an hour, but one person who attended the meeting said the comment period stretched into an hour, as speaker after speaker insisted that the school board leave the parental-notification policy in place.

Some in the crowd called for a recall of school board members. Others insisted that the school board give at least two weeks' notice before putting the parental-notification issue back on the agenda. (The item was removed at the last minute for further study, the school board said.)

"This was an example of how local citizens can win when they prioritize moral values, turn off the TV, and show up to protest along with lots of other people who believe what they do," said Randy Thomasson, president of the Campaign for Children and Families.

"This is as much a victory for average citizens overcoming paralysis as it is a success for parental rights in government schools," Thomasson added.

The issue landed on the Roseville school board agenda after California Attorney General Bill Lockyer issued an opinion saying that school districts do not have to notify a parent when a student leaves school for medical services. Notifying parents would violate the students' right to confidentiality, the opinion said.

The new Roseville school board- sworn in one month ago -- was widely expected to change existing policy to conform with the attorney general's opinion, but opponents insist that an opinion is not law.

With the issue temporarily off the school board agenda, supporters of parental notification are encouraged that current school policy will remain in place -- for now anyway.

The school board got the message, said one concerned citizen. "I would dare them to try it again. We will be watching!"

When concerned citizens speak up, even liberals won't push it.

I would not be waiting to see if the board tries to sneak this change into effect.

Oh, how I hope your question is answered. Where have I heard that "by any means" expression before? (rhetorical question)

by any means

I choose the ballot box. Your "by any means" is reprehensible. And you can point out my sign up date if you wish.

gas chambers, firing squads, thrown out of helicopters at 10,000ft - care to elaborate?

No need for drastic measures- just force 'em to attend church or synagogue, and say grace at meals- they'd self-destruct in a few weeks...

You take the "high road,"
I'll take the "low road,"

... and you'll be in the re-education camp before me.

You're completely right. FR should not be putting with toads that support concentration camps for liberals.

I think we have the wrong idea when we pull comments like those. For me there isn't anything more fun than watching a liberals head explode when reason and logic rips control from their greedy little hands and gives it back to the individual.

Notifying parents would violate the students' right to confidentiality, the opinion said.

Students have no rights to confidentiality. This is a bogus right manufactured by the perverts, based on the notion that a family structure and hierarchy no longer exists. They may be right, but not in my family!

If I had a problem child and the State fed me this BS they would have another useless product of a corrupt system on their hands.

The biggest mystery of all is why this dimbulb issued an opinion.

Who asked him? I mean that question literally. And if no one asked him, why did he issue it? Are the perverts that powerful in this state?

This terminal PC epidemic is a sight to behold.

Hyperbole is the sole property of liberals and the PC clueless?

Remember Pres. Bush pushing a cripple down the stairs?
