Thornburgh was a "Republican for Johnson" in the Democrat year of 1964. He was elected governor as a liberal Republican in 1978 and narrowly reelected in the Democrat year of 1982. He joined the first Bush administration as attorney general and was quite conservative, maybe not another Ed Meese but more conservative than most Bush41 appointees. I don't know if he would try to pacify Dan Rather: I kind of doubt it.
Mapes should move fast and announce her own candidacy for the DNC chairmanship.
I think your question is the answer.
Mapes, like Rather, will be remembered as being discredited and dishonest.
Very interesting!
