can they sue the lawyer for bringing up false charges?

Better, they can file a grievance with the Bar Association for attorney misconduct. That might not sound like much, but in NYS, it immediately gets referred to a Grievance Committee which is an arm of the State Supreme Court Appellate Division. Then the lawyer has to respond to the complaint. They should also pursue a false arrest criminal charge, and false statement and false witness.

In order to do strengthen their position they need to ge tAffidavits from other people who were in line refuting the clain that is made by the attorney.

There is a chance we do not have the whole story here and they were doing something more than just telling each other lawyer jokes. The outcome would be interesting.
