The plan to upgrade the United Nations complex at Turtle Bay involves putting a 35-story building on top of what is listed as a major terrorist target: the Queens Midtown Tunnel.
That raised concerns that the tunnel would become an even more appealing target for terrorists, who might bomb the tunnel to collapse it, bringing down with it the U.N. building - perhaps while it housed the offices of the secretary-general and other high-profile U.N. figures during the renovation of the Secretariat.
The proposed edifice is a 900,000-square-foot "swing space" that would accommodate Secretariat offices during the renovation of the main headquarters building and would be used later as consolidation space for U.N. staff currently spread across the city.

Under the right circumstances, I think bringing down the UN building would be a pretty good idea.

I'm just surprised they didn't want to build it on the
site of the WTC.

You want to know the really sad part about your comment?
I believe that the Impeached One would drop his US citizenship, in a heart beat, to get that position.
The sad part is, there are just a whole lot of people in this country that think that would be a good thing.

Does the UN really need more banquet and cocktail lounge space?...
Now if the expansion was proposed in order to create a HUMUNGOUS TOILET BOWL of which to flush its reptilian denizens, then count me in for a sizable donation.

I saw a story about the fact that the UN building has crumbling walls, no fire sprinklers, and the big meeting chamber has a ceiling that is so crumbly that nets have been placed to catch debris before it hits deligates.

In the end, the USA will end up paying for all of this stuff.
