Romney calls for 14,000 on welfare to work
Boston Globe ^ | January 25, 2005 | Scott S. Greenberger

Pregnant women in their third trimester, mothers with children older than 1, and about 5,600 disabled people are among the additional 14,000 welfare recipients who would have to work under welfare changes Governor Mitt Romney will propose later this week.

Overall, Romney's plan would more than double the number of welfare recipients who have to work, from roughly 12,700 to about 26,700. A total of 49,000 recipients are currently on the state's welfare rolls. The governor's proposal would also ratchet up the hours per week that some recipients must work, and would establish a five-year lifetime limit for receiving benefits.

Ridiculous first paragraph.

The rest of the article actually states, "Hayward emphasized that Massachusetts is not contemplating a work requirement for people who are severely disabled and physically or mentally unable to work, according to the standard set by the federal government. Massachusetts has employed a looser definition, and people who have met the state's standard but not the federal will have to work once the waiver expires, he said."

I'm playing a sad song on the world's smallest violin. I worked until the day my baby was born, as did my daughter and daughter-in-law after me. This is standard for women other than the parasite class that get a check mailed to them because the government has confiscated it from the working stiffs paychecks. Maybe if they had more to do, they wouldn't be pregnant so often.

Women and children hardest hit!

There are plenty of women in American who work during their final trimester and with other kids to care for.

ROMNEY: (banging metal garbage can) "EVERYBODY WAKE UP! IT'S TIME FOR WORK! GET YOUR LAZY ASSES OFF THE COUCH AND OUT OF BED, THE TAXPAYERS AREN'T GONNA SUPPORT YOU FOREVER!"

My wife worked up to the week before our baby was born-- but really only because our babe waited in the womb for an extra week-- she was late.

It's amazing what is considered "disabled" and qualifies one to suck off the public teat. I personally know of a 20 something girl who is a high-school dropout, has had two kids, neither of which she has anything to do with, and damn near killed herself via a heroine overdose. She's total parasite leech on society, and she's on "disability".

I've known others who have milked "disability" for all it was worth for supposed injuries that were anything but disabling.

Go, Mitt.

Wisconsin has had these work requirements for about the last 7 years. The left screamed and ranted it was cruel, but we did it and it worked well.

The numbers on welfare are way down. The weak part is the agencies we have to place or train the welfare people put to work. Most agencies are run by schemers or are over budget. The left worms their way into running these agencies and does its usual dirty work.

Romney needs to make these people work. Mass had all the liberals that love taxes but don't want to pay them but then moved to NH to escape. Now that they are here in NH they bring the same stupid politics that caused their departure. Go figure

In Mass there are to many people collecting and not enough people working.

It's kind of like the shape of Social Security where all the Democrats raided their so called lock box for entitlement programs. Money allocated for the true intentions of social security has been misappropriated to those who never paid into the system then Democrats blame Republicans for bankrupting a dysfunctional process.

If you are able to work you should be looking for a job plain and simple. Unfounately unless Mitt is able to do this with some sort of executive order I doubt it will happen, the legislature here is controlled by the left.

On a related topic I live across from a guy who served on the local police force for 4 or 5 years, and then he hurt his knee (not a major hurt, he is constantly out walking around and doing yard work and such, but he probally can't run very far without pain) and the idiot has been collecting disability for his "injury." Now was he injured? yes, has it hurt his ability to work? maybe as a cop, but not in an office or other non physical job, so why can't he go out and find a job he can do with hurting the knee?

Gosh! How can I possibly keep oppressing the masses if they start earning money and owning private property! They might open an IRA or buy stocks or something. This is outrageous!
