Iran Must Dismantle Nuke Enrichment Program-EU
Reuters ^ | Wed Jan 26, 2005 | Louis Charbonneau

VIENNA (Reuters) - France, Britain and Germany have told Iran they will not settle for anything less than an end to sensitive nuclear processes key to the production of atomic bombs, according to a confidential EU document.

Iran has temporarily frozen its enrichment program, a process of purifying uranium for use as fuel in nuclear power plants or weapons, but insists that atomic fuel production is a sovereign right it will never abandon.

The document, which summarizes this month's talks between the European Union's "big three" -- the EU3 -- and Iran, said Tehran would only allow increased inspections by the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and "certain restrictions on the level and extent of the uranium enrichment program."

"EU3/EU made clear that the outlined approach was unacceptable and that Iran missed the point with this," said the summary, seen in full by Reuters. "Iran has to recognize that the fuel cycle program is the core of the problem."

"Cessation (and) dismantlement of the sensitive part of its nuclear program includes the fuel cycle," it said.

The tough-sounding tone will likely please Washington, which believes Iran has a covert atomic weapons program and warned last week that military force was an option it would not rule out to stop Tehran from getting the bomb.

Iran says its atomic ambitions are strictly peaceful.

Hossein Mousavian, a senior member of Iran's negotiating team, told Iran's official IRNA news agency that termination of the program was not the point of the EU-Iran talks.

"The core of the discussions is not the cessation of enrichment but rather giving objective guarantees about Iran's fuel cycle not being diverted to make atomic bombs," he said.

However, diplomats close to the talks told Reuters the only acceptable "objective guarantee" was a termination of enrichment.

Or what? You'll pester them with 12 more UN Resolutions?

Yea, the green party must have got to them and convinced them to leave that "black gold" They're sitting on top of untouched.

France is making demands?

an oldie, but a goodie :

TERRORISM ALERT IN FRANCE

AP and UPI reported that the French Government
announced yesterday that it has raised its terror
alert level from "run" to "hide." The only two
higher levels in France are "surrender" and
"collaborate."

The raise was precipitated by the recent fire which
destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively
disabling their military.

What would France, Germany, and the UK really do, if it were up to them to enforce this blather. Iran won't believe they have the will to back this empty rhetoric up, any more then we do. Let's just get on with the military ultimatums and stop wasting time.

LAFF!

Wasn't this their negotiating strategy in Yugoslavia as well? Didn't "Lord Owen" Negotiate for over a year and finally come in front of a camera and shrug his shoulders and say, "We can't do it."?

Didn't they sign like a dozen treaties with the "Bosnian Serbs" that were broken before the ink was dry?

Yeah, I got LOTS of faith in the EU diplomatic efforts.

How'd Capone say it in that Kevin Coster movie? You can get more with a kind word and a gun than you can with just a kind word.

Suppose the EU is going to come crawling to the US when their vaunted "soft power" proves ineffective yet AGAIN!

So what will Europe do when Iran continues to give them the finger? They certainly don't have the wherewithall to destroy Iran's nuke facilities, etc. We'll hear the usual sanctions nonsense and We Need the UN to Get Involved baloney. Meanwhile they'll continue to expect the US to fix the problem, while they reserve the right to wring their hands and moan about how evil GW is....so their Muslim population won't blow up half of Europe.

The sound you hear is the mad mullahs splitting their sides open in hysterical laughter at the best joke they've heard all day. The EU bloviating carries about as much weight as a feather in a windstorm.

Maybe the EUrostanis will propose a new oil-for-food program to run for the next decade once sanctions (wink-wink, nudge-nudge) are put into effect. That should leave the mullahs and the nEUnazi's happy and enriched for some time.
