Baghdad - Insurgents have killed at least a dozen people in the rebel campaign to frighten Iraqis away from participating in the weekend election.
In attacks on designated polling stations and troops around the country yesterday, a score of Iraqis were killed or hurt. One US soldier was killed and five were injured.
And as part of an intensifying campaign of intimidation, an al-Qaeda affiliate led by Jordanian terror mastermind Abu Musab al-Zarqawi posted a videotape on the Internet showing the murder of a candidate from the party of interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi.
The tape included a warning to Allawi personally: "You traitor, wait for the angel of death."
Yesterday Iraqi newspapers published for the first time the names of 7 000 National Assembly candidates, many of whose identities were kept secret to protect them from assassination.
To protect voters, hundreds of American soldiers have begun to move out of their massive garrison on the western edge of Baghdad to smaller bases throughout the city so as to respond more quickly to election day attacks.
A total of 300 000 Iraqi and multinational troops will provide security, with Iraq's US-trained forces taking the lead role.
The interim government will deploy an additional 2 500 troops as polling station guards, with about 9 000 Iraqi troops being dispatched to guard oil pipelines.
Iraq's national security adviser, Qassim Dawoud, acknowledged that security remained shaky in four of the 18 provinces.
However, attacks were reported yesterday in at least seven provinces, including relatively peaceful Basra, where militants fired mortar shells at four schools designated as polling stations.

I think Zarqawi and his puppeters in Iran and Syria will soon learn that the "Angel of Death" works for Uncle Sam.
