Basically it was considered practice for inter-tribal warfare so the use of heads or hands of slain enemies is not only believable but appropriate. Every race of mankind has been guilty of savagery at one time or another. It is very good to know what life was
actually like in pre-Christian times and in non-Christian societies.
On a loosely related topic, I read Michael Crichton's new book a few weeks ago and I have to admit enjoying picturing Martin Sheen in the role of the delusional actor / TV show president. You'll need to read the book to see the connection with this post, but suffice it to say his last role was a tasty one.
