A University of Colorado student group filed a motion in U.S. District Court in Denver this morning seeking a preliminary injunction against the university to allow embattled professor Ward Churchill to speak on campus.
A hearing on the motion is set for 4 p.m., said David Rhone, a spokesman for the group, CU Students for Churchill.
Churchill was to speak at 7 p.m. today in the Glenn Miller Ballroom. However, late Monday, CU officials canceled the speech, citing safety concerns.
"We are disappointed in the university for canceling professor Churchill’s lecture scheduled for tonight in the University Memorial Center," Rhone said in a statement today. "Many other, more controversial figures have spoken on campus and the university’s blanket statement regarding the safety of professor Churchill and students is simply not a valid reason to cancel this planned event."
The student group is represented by attorney David Lane. He could not be reached for comment this morning.

I love what's happening up there, and not just that Churchill will likely lose his job. It forces these braindead students to look closely at what they think are their "deeply held convictions". Some will see the cliff they're headed towards and slam on the brakes. They'll at least moderate their ideology, if not begin to see how flat out wrong they truly are. Others will go creening over the edge. Either way, we win. We either gain newly educated converts, or we can more easily identify the loons. Thank you, Ward Churchill, for your rank stupidity, which makes my life easier, and much more entertaining.
I only hope that very extreme cases like this give parents/taxpayers a better sense of what's happening in "higher education" in this country. But they might do better to remember that "I Am Charlotte Simmons" is not really fiction. When you take a bunch of people facing serious challenges from their hormones and place them in the care of vicious people who are set on corrupting them, you get college life in the USA today.
Gotta love the irony here. First, the lefties at the school cancel the event because of "security concerns" that weren't really there. Then, the lefty students sue the school for "protecting" them!
Even more ironic is this crypto-Marxist Indian wannabe requires the protection of civil society so that he may advocate the destruction of that very same civil society.
Be helpful to get the names of all the members of this group.
