BASRA, Iraq (Reuters) - Gunmen killed the Basra correspondent of the U.S.-funded television station Alhurra outside his house in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, police said on Wednesday.

Abdul-Hussein Khazal was killed when several gunmen attacked his house, police said.

Alhurra is an Arabic-language satellite station set up with U.S. funding last year in an effort to compete with other Arabic satellite channels like Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya. It is based in the state of Virginia.

Dozens of foreign and Iraqi journalists have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003.

All three attacks were claimed by the al Qaeda network in Iraq, led by Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Washington says Zarqawi is its top foe in Iraq and is offering $25 million (13.42 million pounds) for information leading to his death or capture.
25 million is 1/33 of a percent of this year's US expenditure in Iraq. That's ridiculous. Can't we increase it to 1/3 of a percent? That would be 275 million. And that would get results. That would be enough to motivate a group of mercenaries to take the risks necessary to get the job done.
