ITHACA--According to the Ithaca Journal (which cannot be reposted here thanks to the cretins at Gannett news), the City of Ithaca and the rest of Tompkins County is considering imposing a local income tax.
According to the article, the democrat-controlled legislature is looking at a 10 percent surcharge on top of the amount of state taxes county residents pay. They are also considering an additional 1 percent surcharge on income of more than $100,000, and 2 percent added for incomes of $200,000 or more.
Recognizing that a lot of people drive into the county to work at Cornell from outlying (red counties), and that this is a way to grab some of their money too, the county is also considering of adding a commuter or payroll tax to capture revenue from those people lucky enough not to live in the most liberal city in America.
This is especially troubling because so many people in the adjoining counties have to commute into Ithaca to work and this plan would shift Tompkins Countys property tax burden onto those residents of adjoining counties.
In other words, Ithaca's tax and spend policies have gotten so out of hand that they need to start draining the resources of adjoining municipalities to fund their liberal utopia.
For those on my ping list who live in counties that adjoin Tompkins County (Cayuga County, Cortland County, Tioga County, Chemung County, Seneca County and Schuyler County), please take note: the City of Evil is now out to tax you and/or your neighbors.
Anyone who chooses to live in Ithaca deserves whatever they get.
I think the people should pay the taxes with Ithaca Hours!
Unfortunately, this would have the effect of taxing people who don't live there also. See above.
What do you want to bet that many businesses will relocate into ajoining counties?
It is time for some people to move.
Oh, you're right. I foresee an exodus of workers and/or businesses.
Since the two largest employers are Cornell and Ithaca College, the City of Evil knows their "big two" won't relocate.
Wow! I thought you guys were kidding about that "City of Evil" stuff. I guess it really is evil.
Upstate NY is one of the only places in all America to lose population and employment over the decades. D'oh!
Yep. But you keep electing those Democrats up there!
Some people just can't see the handwriting on the
wall.
Amen!
They are blind AND stupid.
Hey! What's the story on the little purple creature? I used to work with the guy who designed that character for a tv show called (I think) "Tripping the Rift". And he named him "Chode".
Other suggestions:
- charge a fee to skinnydip at "The Res"
- put pay toilets along College Ave. so drunks don't have to pee in private yards
- tack another fee onto students bills [do they still have that NYPIRG crap?]
New York City does this, too.
But how much of that "growth" was actually students being counted as residents? There was a big push, begining in the late 80s for students to declare residency (typically for voting purposes) in Ithaca and other college towns.
