CA: Democrats form umbrella group to take on Schwarzenegger

SACRAMENTO (AP) - A coalition of labor unions, education groups and health care advocates have established an umbrella political organization to help direct Democratic opposition to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his package of measures expected in a special election this fall.

Calling themselves "Seriously, Saving California," the newly formed group would also support alternative initiatives that organizations allied with the state's Democratic Party are sponsoring, said John Hein, a former official with the California Teachers Association who is helping organize the committee.

Hein, now a director of a national education advocacy group, said Wednesday the political committee is so new membership has yet to be determined and no decisions have been made about which initiatives will be supported or opposed.

"You can call it a multi-initiative committee," he said. "It's being pulled together by a number of people who would be affected by the governor's proposals as well as people who have submitted their own proposal."

While the CTA is likely to be a major player in the organization, Hein said, it would be "inaccurate" to call the committee a CTA group.

Schwarzenegger has proposed constitutional amendments that would impose across-the-board spending cuts when revenues failed to match spending; give authority for drawing legislative districts to retired judges; turn the state's pension system into something more like a 401(k) plan; and set base teacher pay on merit rather than tenure.

These measures as well as others from the business community or conservative groups are being backed by a political committee run by Schwarzenegger allies called "Citizens to Save California."

Hein noted the name of the new Democratic committee is intended somewhat tongue-in-cheek to draw a distinction with Schwarzenegger organization.

These groups are always establishing "umbrella" organizations. They'd be a lot more useful if they made actual umbrellas. The usual gang of idiots, defending the right of their members to be unproductive and unaccountable.
