WOMAN'S CORPSE IN WATER TANK

By PERRY CHIARAMONTE

February 10, 2005 -- Divers found the body of a New Jersey water-treatment chemist at the bottom of a gigantic underground tank last night, and investigators are looking into the possibility of foul play. Meanwhile, the Passaic Valley Water Commission advised customers in 17 towns to boil their water — a customary precaution when a foreign object is found in a tank.

Geetha Angara, 43, a senior chemist, was last seen as she left her office at the commission's Totowa plant at around 10 a.m. Tuesday to check instruments in a water holding tank.

Police and firefighters began looking for Angara Tuesday night, and yesterday searched the plant's grounds and underground tanks, which hold millions of gallons of water.

Customary? How often does New Jersey get dead bodies in the water supply? Should they mark their calendars?

Gee, ya think? what great reporting!!! keep me informed! Does this mean that investigators are also looking into the possibility that the water may have been contaminated, or that there is a possibility the person may not have been able to breathe at the bottom of the tank?

Some worry here: a senior chemist of the water treatment plant? I'm hoping officials make sure the only bad thing in the water is the body.

If it's that easy to throw a body in there I think we have a more serious problem than boiling water. Condolences to the family.

Usually the plants, within the buildings, are wide open, with just a railing to separate someone fromk the tanks. It would be nothing to spit into the tank.

A couple years back, I helped replace a freshwater supply pump that got fouled by a couple rats (or dogs, or whatever, they were badly decomposed) that wrecked the pump.

I googled the news about this and some of the articles mention a broken beaker beside the tank. Wonder if she interrupted someone adding something?
