A New York jury Thursday convicted a veteran defense lawyer of aiding terrorists by smuggling messages from an imprisoned Islamic radical to his followers.

Lynne Stewart, 65, a leftist civil rights lawyer who has represented revolutionaries and other unpopular defendants for more than 30 years, was found guilty on all five counts against her in federal court.

"Stewart slumped back into her chair, devastation etched across her face, as the jury foreman read the guilty verdict. She turned pale, and tears began to brim around her eyes. She wiped her forehead with her hand but uttered no sound."

"Among her supporters in the courtroom, however, the verdict brought gasps and wails."

"The counts on which Stewart was found guilty included aiding terrorist activity, conspiracy and defrauding the government by breaking her pledge to keep Abdel Rahman, known as the "blind sheikh," from communicating with his followers."

"Abdel Rahman was sentenced to life in prison in 1996 on charges of conspiring to destroy the United Nations and FBI buildings in New York and local landmarks including the Lincoln and Holland tunnels and the George Washington Bridge."

Chalk one up for our side.

Can someone post her picture? It is in the article.

Looks like a middle-aged school teacher, not a terrorist.

These terrorists are entitled to a robust defense, but the lawyer can't be part of the criminal conspiracy.

Whatever the maximum sentence is here's hoping that the judge specifies a sentence just one short of the maximum with no parole.

"I don't have any problem with Mao or Stalin or the Vietnamese leaders or certainly Fidel locking up people they see as dangerous. Because so often, dissidence has been used by the greater powers to undermine a people's revolution."

How does it feel...?

"The plot was conceived as a sequel to the February 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center and involved suicide truck and car bombs, prosecutors said. The bombings, they said, were planned for July 4, 1993, and were intended to kill hundreds of people."

Let's hope that creep in Boulder Ward Churchill is paying attention.

These communists always talk about "the people" but don't want the people to vote and disparage elected leaders.

My God, she even liked Stalin and Mao.

I hope everyone see that we still have communists out there and that they are helping the terrorists. This was exposed in a court of law.

I guess real legal reform is possible.
Start sending them up the river and they'll think twice about selling out our country.

Thanks for the picture.

"Stewart denied any wrongdoing and argued during the trial that she was simply representing her client."

I guess the jury decided that was a big fat lie!!!!

Washington Post:
"When you put Osama bin Laden in a courtroom and ask a jury to ignore it, you're asking a lot," she complained, referring to a tape shown during the trial of the terrorist leader expressing his support for her client.

Bin laden has a big mouth.

Her clients are even wackier I have met a couple. You might be provoked to violence if you had to listen to the rants. My favorite was the one hour long evil hospitals.

Here's the best line from the Newsday.com article (I don't "do" the Post)

Stewart repeatedly declared her innocence during the trial, maintaining she was unfairly targeted by overeager prosecutors. She testified on her own behalf as well, saying she believed violence was sometimes necessary to rid society of evil -- even in America.

"To rid ourselves of the entrenched, voracious type of capitalism that is in this country that perpetuates sexism and racism, I don't think that can come nonviolently," she said.

Washington Post:

A Web site by a defense committee for Stewart vowed Thursday to continue fighting to free her.

It said of the case against her: "This is an obvious attempt by the U.S. government to silence dissent and install fear in those who would fight against the U.S. government's racism, seek to help Arabs and Muslims being prosecuted for free speech and defend the rights of all oppressed people."
