Goodbye, Terry, Sorry We Lost
National Review Online ^ | February 11, 2005 | Byron York

Here's the dilemma Democrats faced as they staged the enormous and expensive "Tribute to Chairman Terry McAuliffe" at Washington's National Building Museum Thursday night: How do you pay tribute to a man whose main legacy was losing elections?

And the answer was: awkwardly and painfully.

After the standard gala-evening beginning — "God Bless America" sung by the Urban Nation Hip-Hop choir, an emotional tribute to McAuliffe from actress Ciceley Tyson, and a slide show of McAuliffe's tenure at the Democratic National Committee projected on huge screens around the room — the program got underway with a dream-sequence video of McAuliffe, sitting with his feet up, at his desk at DNC headquarters.

If only 60,000 votes had gone the other way in Ohio, McAuliffe says to himself, as he begins to doze off. If only...

The video then cut to the opening of CNN's Crossfire. In McAuliffe's dream, the program begins with the announcer asking, What's next for Terry McAuliffe? After the DNC chief led his party to victory in the House, the Senate, and the White House, will McAuliffe now become secretary of Commerce? An ambassador? The sky's the limit.

And then, awkwardly and painfully, Crossfire co-host — and Democratic consultant — Paul Begala brings McAuliffe's dream to an end. All those victories were just dreams.

After the video, the Democratic comedian Al Franken took the stage. After a few awkward and painful jokes — Franken tried to get a laugh out of the crowd by saying, "I'm probably the only Democrat who was for the war but against the troops" and then reminding them that he had been on several USO tours — Franken introduced a series of videos from television personalities bidding farewell to McAuliffe.

Franken's the only celebrity best known for resembling nothing so much as an oafish, slovenly Fetal Alcohol Syndrome baby. With black horn rims. :)

Then Kerry told one of those awkward and painful jokes that he sometimes seemed to specialize in during the campaign. "After I lost, Terry was trying to make me feel better," Kerry told the crowd, "and he said, 'Look, the exit polls were all wrong. You won 100 percent of the wind-surfing goose-hunters."

Well, I laughed.

"It was all done in good humor, but the effect, at the supposedly gala tribute to McAuliffe, was awkward and painful."

Gee, ya think?

Good riddence McAwful, you are a magnificent failure, and you won't be missed by me.

Franken can't even come up with his own jokes. That was originally said by Bill Hicks about Gulf War 1 on his Relentless album. I think Hicks was in Canada when he said that.

A dream sequence showing the dims winning? How insulting! Did it include a list of everything McAwfull did wrong? Who's idea was that?

"As McAuliffe spoke, Clinton and Kerry began an animated conversation onstage. Members of the audience, too, renewed their loud conversations with one another. And many of them began to leave."

Hilarious! They got up and began leaving as the man they were "honoring" spoke.

Democratic comedian Al Franken

That explains why he's not funny.

I am going to miss Terry.

He was one of the best things to ever happen to the GOP.

The democrats lost their shorts under him.

I think Dean will cause a short spike in interest for the democrat party, but he'll never be able to pull the middle of the roaders into the party.

McAuliffe was supposed to have done that, but as the last few elections show, the radical left has control of the party. They can't win that way.

But... Hillary is on the horizon. Fasten your seat belts.

Okay, who says the Dem's have no sense of humor? Huh, c'mon admit it, they're a hoot!

I'll miss him. It is hard to imagine any DNC chair who will ever do more for the Republicans. During Terry's tenure, the Republicans won the Presidency, the Senate, the House and a majority of the state governorships and state legislatures. What more can any DNC chair do?

I'm going to miss him. Dean is going to need to work hard to rise to McAwfuls level of incompetence.

A dream sequence showing the dims winning?

Pretty pathetic. But what else could they do? A reality sequence showing the Democrats losing everything? It wouldn't have been very festive for the Democrats.

If only 60,000 votes had gone the other way in Ohio...

I notice that the democrats keep shrinking the numbers. Now its 60k instead of 120k? I heard someoen say htey got 59 millions votes and counting. And now Dubya only won by 3.5 million votes and shrinking? These people are delusional.

In reality, that dream sequence should've resembled a really bad acid trip. People inside politics getting murdered, imprisoned, etc., all at the hands of McAwful and the 'toons.

While I particularly loathe McAweful, he was a splendid fund raiser. The problem is no matter how hard you try you can't polish a turd, even when you raise more money than the RNC. That idiot Dean won't raise as much as Terry and instead of trading in the turds for a real message, his idea is simply make the turds bigger(go further left) and parade them around the Red States. Problem is, Red staters will see it for what it is, more turds from the party of turds. Unless something unforseeable occurs, there are going to be more turd losses in 06.

Dean and Mcaweful will have presided over the disintigration of a once powerful political party. It wouldn't suprise me if a center left party arises in '07 after further turd losses. I could see Lieberman and others breaking ranks and forming it as their base erodes further.
