I know that it's been a really rough winter so far. But who would have thought that Hell was gonna to freeze over?
"What do I mean by that?," you ask. Well, I just got word that Buena Vista Home Entertainment will be releasing "Song of the South" on DVD in the Fall of 2006.
That's right. "Song of the South." The Academy Award winning film that former Disney Feature Animation head Thomas Schumacher once told Roger Ebert was on "permanent moratorium" has reportedly been greenlit for release late next year. A special 60th anniversary edition that -- thanks to a plethora of extra features -- will try & put this somewhat controversial motion picture in historial context.

Given that Disneyana fans have been clamoring for a "Song of the South" DVD for nearly a decade now, BVHE execs are hoping that all of this pent-up demand will eventually translate in really big sales for this disc. Disney is hoping to sell at least 10-12 million units of this particular motion picture.
"But aren't Disney Company execs concerned about how the African American community may response to 'Song of the South' 's release of DVD?," you continue. Yep. I won't lie to you folks. There's a lot of people in the Team Disney Burbank building who are very concerned that -- by releasing this much maligned motion picture on home video & DVD -- that the Mouse House is potentially opening itself up to a ton of bad publicity.

Say what???
Oh boy, two full years for the race baiters to cry and work themselves into a "passion of the Christ" frenzy.
I saw it in the theatres back in 1982 or so, I think they ran it as a double feature with "Tron." Hopefully it will be intact and not butchered like a lot of movies and cartoons were for the sake of being PC.
Really, I saw a copy of "Uncle Ream-us" in the video store yesterday.
You need to get out of the XXX section.
There is NO WAY that they will release the real deal without chopping it up and trying to make it PC.
Riots in the streets, boycotts, diversity roundtables, discussion guides... what else did I miss?
I wonder how they will butcher it.
Sex Trek IV: The Next Penetration
Thank heavens for the Japanese laserdisk version....
I'm sure that one of the Extras included on this DVD will be a heaping dose of Sensitivity Training 101. I don't get it: movies are made all the time, that seem to be demeaning to blacks. From what little I remember of SotS, it featured a kind black man who had a positive relationship with two white children.
Zip a dee doo dah. Loved this when I was a child.
Not necessarily. Disney recently released all of its wartime propaganda films, including those that are far harsher toward Japs and Krauts than SotS is toward blacks. They'll film a disclaimer or something, but the film will probably remain intact.
They're going to CGI it so Uncle Remus is from the Middle East. "Zippadee DooDah" will be replaced with "Islam Is Peaceful". You hoid it here foist.
I think you got it all. I was going to throw in legal extortion, but that's covered under boycotts.
Actually, Uncle Remus is the smartest character in the film.
Cool. We were talking about Song of the South months ago on FR. I think you can buy it online now
I'm probably part of the last group of kids who got to see that in the theatre back in the early 1980's. The movie is not racist, and is all about Uncle Reamus teaching the little boy lessons in life.
"It was one of those Zippidy Doo-Da days." - Uncle Reamus
