My Catholic experience consisted of going to church on Sunday and that was about it. I grew up in the 70's, also and it was very wishy-washy. We had a gay priest for about 5 years. Even then I knew something was different about that man!
It wasn't until I grew up that I truly became Catholic. The church is what you make of it. Not enough adult education? Take your concerns to the priest! I have church hopped for years because of all our moves. I have seen Liturgical abuse in way too many churches. But instead of running away, I'm trying to help! Find yourself a good Catholic bookstore and start reading. There are so many wonderful books out there! Not everyone will agree with me, but Scott Hahn, Patrick Madrid, Jeff Cavins and Father Corapi really brought me back to the Church. You might try one of their books. Everyone's journey is unique. I hope you find what you are looking for or what God wants you to find!! :-)

Thanks for your ping!
Indeed - that has happened in the past.........and there was a point when there were three contenders for the papacy, all claiming to be valid. As I recall, even some saints of the era mistakenly supported one who was later determined to be an Anti-pope. Everybody makes mistakes.......!
