Yards brewery in or near Philadelphia makes 'George Washington Tavern Porter' and a 'Thomas Jefferson Porter,' both taken from original writings of the founding fathers. I was visiting the City Tavern in that town, just after my first visit to the Liberty Bell and to Constitution Hall last February, and my Italian wife, who loves our country and our history deeply, couldn't resist ordering the Washington brew while I dandled children.
The beers were foody two hundred years ago: rich, robust, and nutritious.
My wife and I are converts. We move back and forth between Yards and St. Peter's Old Style Porter which we have brought over from England (where I went to school and where Mark spends a good deal of time).
Either might be appropriate. Either will repay the effort to find them.
