WASHINGTON (AFP) - Former US President George H.W. Bush said in an interview he was convinced his younger son, Florida Governor Jeb Bush, will not run for president in 2008 to replace elder brother President George W. Bush (news - web sites).

Speculation about Jeb Bush's 2008 ambitions were fueled by his high-profile trip to South Asia in the wake of the December tsunami at the head of a US government delegation, whose task was to assess damage and draft US relief plans.
Some saw the trip as a White House attempt to increase the Florida governor's media exposure ahead of a campaign.
In an interview with Newsweek magazine, however, the elder Bush said he believed a 2008 presidential bid for his younger son was unlikely.
"He's pretty well convinced me that he's not going to," Bush said. "My expectation is that Mrs. Clinton will run and Governor Bush won't in 2008."
US Senator Hillary Clinton (news - web sites) of New York, wife of former president Bill Clinton (news - web sites), who defeated Bush in 1992, is considered a front-runner of the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.
The former president insisted, however, the current Florida governor would make "an outstanding president."
"He knows the issues, he's a strong leader," he said of Jeb Bush.
Draft Jeb 2008!
its the smart move, the country will not elect another Bush on the heels of 43. Jeb has to stay visible, we may well need him in 2012. or, perhaps he would make a good VP candidate in 2008.
You said it. How many times does the Jeb for President idea need to be buried? He's not going to run in 2008, and if he did, he'd lose.
Yup. Jeb will not run in 08. He'll let Hillary drive the country into the ground, and then he'll run against her in '12.
Say it aint so!
Why do they keep telling us this? Sheesh.
I wish these gossip mongers posing as journalists would take Jeb's word rather than harassing every member of his family. Jeb has stated he has no desire to run. He isn't being flirtatious. The only one playing "cute" is the Senator from N.Y.
Cute? Hillary? Ewwwwww. ;-)
"Yup. Jeb will not run in 08. He'll let Hillary drive the country into the ground, and then he'll run against her in '12."
That's pretty defeatist to just assume HRC will win in 2008.
I'm confident we could beat her with our candidate in 2008, even though I am not confident I could tell you who that is.
Rumor has it that W's knickname for Condi is "44", and he ain't talking about her measurements.
I hope Jeb runs in 2012 or 2016, depending on who wins 2008.
I pray to God this isn't true, or there could be a civil war in Republican ranks come 2008.
You can not even ask Jeb about running, he get visibly enraged and is starting to lose his temper with the question.
He's not running, and the media is starting to realize its smarter not to ask him to his face.
It says "unlikely" which means there is still a chance! Kind of like on "Dumb and Dumber" (so what you are saying is that there is still a chance).
He's not running, and the media is starting to realize its smarter not to ask him to his face.
It's a shame everyone is pushing this because of Jeb's brother and his father. The man has a portfolio of successes in Florida. But that's not the driving factor.
I would vote for Condi, but I'm not sure she could be Hillary.
One of the things that amazes me, is that people forget, number 1, he's pretty young, he can wait 4 or 8 years and then run, there is no need for him to charge ahead right now, and 2, he does have a family, and money, so he might want to relax a little bit, take a break, hang with the wife and kids, enjoy life, do some work in the private sector, and maybe down the road, get back in again.
Its no rush, and he's probably confident in the pool of potential GOP canidates in 2008.
Jeb has not been the friend of property rights here in Florida. Many a conservative here has told me that they will not just contribute against Jeb, but that they will actively work against him for President.
Based on only about a two hour talk with him, and that before he became governor here in the Sheeples Republic of FloriDUH, I am convinced that he is a basically good man, clearly a well educated and experienced manager - but one who has been woefully mis-served by those serving under his administration in the bureaucracies.
I'd like to see Zell Miller and Dr. Rice run. :-)
Granted that Nature Conservancy put a good deal of money into his campaigns, it still appear that his failure to remove the agency holdovers from the prior decades of Democrats will be his greatest failure when all is said and done.
Florida has one of the most socialized bureaucracies in America. And that is quite a sorry state of affairs for a state with a supposedly Republican governor for the last eight years.
Much as I liked the man, I couldn't bring my self to repeat either of my previous votes for him as things now stand.
A pity, as his brother will go down in history as the right man at the right time, at least on some things.
In closing, both brothers seem a bit overly fond of international agreements which do not actually produce the alleged benefits for America - and far too fond of the UN.
Oops! Fourth line should be the last. Sorry.
