Given that we now are reasonably certain that the center of the earth is a fast breeder reactor with periodic buildups of Plutonium causing increased reactivity, any bump in the earth's magnetic field in any way can cause a big change in the shape of the earth's core. These changes, transmitted up through the remaining layers could change things here on the top layer.
