Raelians swagger for femininity - Mistaken for strippers
Miami Herald ^ | March 8, 2005 | REBECCA DELLAGLORIA rdellagloria@herald.com

The world, according to followers of the prophet Rael, would be a better place if all people embraced their feminine side. In furtherance of this goal, nearly a dozen scantily-clad Raelians paraded on Lincoln Road Sunday for Femininity Day.

Decked in goddess garb -- butterfly wings, pasties and sparkly purple wraps -- the seven women marched from Washington Avenue to Alton Road, carrying signs and passing out fliers to bring others to the cause. They were joined by three men -- one a buff, blonde massage therapist from Switzerland who wore only a Speedo.

''The body is beautiful and we should be free,'' said Donna Newman, a Miami Raelian who handles the group's public relations.

The Raelians had initially said their display would include a ''fully nude choreographed street performance.'' They thought better of it upon learning of Miami Beach nudity laws.

For those who don't remember, the Raelians -- followers of the French-born race-car driver cum prophet, Rael -- claimed to have cloned a baby girl in 2002. Believers say aliens created the human race in a laboratory 22,000 years ago and are still keeping watch.

More than 60,000 people the world over are said to believe the Raelian philosophy. Only 15 or so, however, live in South Florida. Most showed up in support of spreading the goal of human acceptance and world peace through an understanding of women's power to unite.

But the group's message might have been lost in the spectacle. As they made their way down Lincoln Road -- stopping only to perform a dance to Shania Twain's Man, I Feel Like a Woman -- throngs of tourists and locals alike reached for their cameras, or camera phones.

''I thought they were strippers,'' said Dawn Wentworth, in town from Las Vegas.

Sisters Cendrine and Michelle Tremblay -- who came down from Tampa and were the only two who wore dresses rather than the goddess attire -- were even asked out on dates. Cendrine, a 40-ish looking woman in immaculate physical condition, wore a dress so tight and small, it rode up, baring the bottom of her buttocks.

''I think it's disgusting; there are children here,'' said Esther Sait, an Orthodox Jew walking by with family when the scene unfolded.

The Raelians would agree that it's the world that's messed up -- not them. ''We're here to give a message to humanity: violence, hate, racism is mostly perpetrated by man. It's just the nature of man to be aggressive. Women have an innate affinity for kindness,'' Newman said. ``Wouldn't it be beautiful if men, instead of going to into battle with machine guns, carried roses in their hands?''

Good Lord! Is that a photo of a real human or the re-released H.P. Lovecraft's "Dagon" DVD cover?

The cute face is transitory. The empty head lasts forever.

"how about someone with a little more credibilty"

Hey, he IS a prophet. He prophesied, "If I start a whacko religion, I will have a lot of whackos keeping me well laid and giving me money."

And lo, it came to pass.

If they did that in March, Edmonton, AL instead of Miami, FL, it would be easier to believe that they really were motivated by a "higher power"!

Media math.

You forgot the THREE....

They were joined by three men -- one a buff, blonde massage therapist from Switzerland who wore only a Speedo.

REAL media math is:

"When the numbers are LOWER than you think your cause deserves; round up.

When they are greater than THEIR cause deserves; round down."

Did anyone notice: there seemed to be an overpresentation of self identified 'molecular biologists' belonging to this group?

My daughter's middle name is Raelia. It's a combination of the names of my wife's great-grandmothers - Rae and Lia. My wife and I thought we had a pretty unique thing going on - a pretty clever middle name - one that would be rare, at best.

About a year after our daughter was born, I heard about these Raelian whack-jobs, and we've considered changing her middle name ever since.
