Mosque's donation to charity prompts closing of account (CAIR seethes)

PALOS HILLS, Ill. (AP) A local bank has closed a mosque's account after it donated money to an Islamic charity under federal investigation for allegedly helping terrorists.

Family Bank and Trust Co. closed the account of the Mosque Foundation in Bridgeview after the mosque wrote two checks to the Islamic American Relief Agency, according to the mosque's imam, Sheikh Jamal Said.

Mosque Foundation president Oussama Jamal said the mosque made its donations in August and September, before the federal government froze the charity's assets and raided its Missouri offices in October.

The Treasury Department alleged Islamic American Relief was part of an international front group for Hamas and al Qaeda, a charge denied by charity officials.

Jim Zaring, the president of Family Bank, did not immediately return a call seeking comment Friday. The bank closed the mosque's account in December.

The Bridgeview mosque also made donations to Islamic American Relief in 1992 and 1999 totaling $20,393, according to the mosque's annual reports. The mosque gave about $374,000 to three other charities that were later shut down by the federal government because of alleged ties to terrorism.

Some in the Muslim community question the bank's right to close an account based on a transaction that was legal at the time it was made. Arsalan Iftikar, a legal adviser for the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations, said a New Jersey bank recently closed a mosque's accounts. He suspects other banks might take similar action.

``We're starting to see a trend of Muslim institutions and individuals' (accounts) being closed summarily without any explanation,'' Iftikar said.

When it froze Islamic American Relief's assets in October, the Treasury Department alleged the group was part of an international network linked to terrorism called the Islamic African Relief Agency, which was accused of giving money to al Qaeda and other suspected terrorist groups.

A Houston mosque founded by former NBA star Hakeem Olajuwon was criticized earlier this year for contributing to Islamic American Relief and a second charity allegedly linked to terrorism.

If CAIR ever wants to even begin to be taken seriously, they'll do what the Spanish mullahs did - issue a Fatwa against Osama Bin Laden.

Ummmm...isn't the reason why the account was being closed was because the charity that it donated to was under investigation from the feds? [shakes head]

Looks like the sheikh from the Bridgeview mosque is anything but a moderate. Trained in Saudi Arabia.

< An imposing man with a bushy brown beard, Sheik Jamal mesmerized worshipers with his eloquent sermons and ardent pleas to help oppressed Muslims. He was greatly admired by mosque-goers, who frequently came to him to settle everyday domestic disputes.

As a child, he was inspired by the Muslim Brotherhood. Growing up on the West Bank, he learned about a nearby graveyard for Brotherhood members who had died fighting for a Palestinian homeland. He later brought his own children to the cemetery to pay homage to the fighters, according to a tape of a speech he gave at a Muslim conference in 2000.

During the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, his family moved to Jordan, where he would always maintain ties, eventually building a large house in an upscale neighborhood in Amman.

After studying Islam at a Saudi Arabian university, he came to Chicago to teach Arabic to African-American Muslims. In 1985, at age 28, Sheik Jamal became prayer leader in Bridgeview. Part of his salary would be paid by the government of Saudi Arabia--a stipend that totaled about $2,000 a month by 2004, according to Saudi Embassy officials in Washington.

Many at the mosque were already familiar with his views. As a guest speaker several years earlier, he had given a memorable sermon in which he criticized the mosque women for not dressing modestly.

As prayer leader, he preached that America was a land of disbelievers, where families were not valued, according to mosque-goers. He told worshipers that they should not celebrate Valentine's Day and Thanksgiving because those were not Islamic holidays. He told teenage boys and girls not to mingle.

Over time, Sheik Jamal developed a national reputation and easily attracted prominent Muslim activists to Bridgeview.>>

"Islam isn't in America to be equal to any other faith,

Strange thing, that American Capitalism - if you don't like a customer, you don't have to put up with them. If it's so bad, they're free to take their money out of an AMERICAN bank and put it a bank run by muslims, or perhaps where the sun don't shine. Or maybe invest in a one-way ticket back to where they came from...

It does make one wonder if there are any muslim "charities" that do not fund terror.
