Bolton Nomination Fight Expected to Get Ugly

Susan Jones
Morning Editor

(CNSNews.com) - Supporters of John Bolton are bracing for a "big and ugly" confirmation battle over his nomination as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Move America Forward, a group that wants to evict the United Nations from U.S. soil, is trying to counteract a "stop Bolton" campaign by going in the opposite direction -- urging Americans to express their "strong and enthusiastic support" for Bolton's nomination.

"Americans have had enough of the fraud, corruption and anti-Americanism that has overrun the United Nations," said Melanie Morgan, co-chair of Move America Forward.

"We admire John Bolton's track record of fighting to put America's interests first, and his willingness to take a direct and tough approach against those who threaten America's security and national interests," Morgan added.

The "Stop Bolton" campaign was launched by Citizens for Global Solutions, and dozens of left-leaning organizations and websites have now joined the anti-Bolton effort. That includes MoveOn.org, which is urging its members to "call your Senator today and ask him to vote against John Bolton as U.N. Ambassador.""

A report in Monday's Washington Times said Democrats predict Bolton will face tough grilling when he appears before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee -- probably in early April.

The Washington Times reported that senators from both parties believe Bolton will have to explain his past comments about the U.N. being useless.

Indeed, Bolton has never shied away from defending American interests and speaking out against the problems at the U.N., said Howard Kaloogian, co-chair of Move America Forward.

"At a time when some failed politicians were calling for a 'global test' to determine American foreign policy decisions, John Bolton has been unabashedly fighting to ensure that the United States makes decisions based on what's good for our own nation," he said.

Move America Forward noted that during the first year of the Bush administration, it was Bolton who notified the United Nations that the U.S. would not abide by the International Criminal Court, which severely eroded American sovereignty, the Bush administration said.

Bolton also has annoyed liberals with his strident opposition to the policies of the U.N., Move America Forward said.

In a 1994 speech, Bolton said, "There is no United Nations. There is an international community that occasionally can be led by the only real power left in the world... the United States."

Melanie Morgan warned that the Bolton confirmation hearings are likely to be some of the ugliest ever seen in the U.S. Senate.

"When John Bolton stood up to the nuclear-weapons-toting regime in North Korea, the terrorist-supporting [North Korean] leadership called Bolton 'human scum.'

"John Bolton will be lucky to be treated any better by U.S. senators who oppose his nomination, Morgan said. "The John Kerry and Ted Kennedy crowd just don't understand how wrong they are or how fed up the American people are with their 'Blame America First' hysterics," she added.

Move America Forward's "Support John Bolton" campaign plans to produce and air television commercials on national television networks. And it is urging Americans to lobby senators involved in Bolton's confirmation hearing.

This confirmation is something conservatives should win. If FR activists join the fight, I am sure that conservatives will crush liberals and get him confirmed after a pitched battle.

Basically, the Democrats are telling us that they want "business as usual." That means they oppose Bolton.

And that's why everyone here needs to contact their Senators, whether they be GOP or Democrat.

I faxed both of my Senators. (Nelson and Martinez)

Have you?

The Democrats will announce they're gonna filibuster him. A straight talker on behalf of America doesn't make them exactly jump for joy!

Maybe Feinstein can be persuaded with a lot of pressure.

I know Boxer is a lost cause.

As a Democrat- I find Bolton to follow in the tradition of Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

Here is a Pro Bolton site that is getting message out:
http://www.moveamericaforward.org/index.php/SpecialProjects/SupportBolton
.
Support John Bolton
For U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations
We need someone who can stand up to the “Blame America First” crowd at the United Nations. We need an ambassador to the U.N. who won’t be intimidated by the tyrants, despots and dictators who routinely team up to fight American interests at the U.N.

John Bolton is the man this country needs to fight for our American values.

You can help ensure that John Bolton is confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve as America’s ambassador to the United Nations.

We need you to email every one of the offices listed below. These are some of the most important Democrat Senators who will vote for or against Bolton’s nomination on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Let each office know that you are a supporter of John Bolton’s nomination as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Tell them that you will not tolerate any attempt at a smear campaign by the Senate Democrat leadership of Mr. Bolton.

"The John Kerry and Ted Kennedy crowd just don't understand how wrong they are or how fed up the American people are with their 'Blame America First' hysterics," she added.

Kerry and Kennedy are bleating like the lost sheep they are for the Socialism they crave, a failed form of government, but that doesn't stop them for they are fools.

Amity Shales writes about (The vanguard of muscular diplomacy) here; a more apt description of John Bolton and Paul Wolfowitz can’t be found. It is the integrity with which these two gentlemen speak, no powder puff diplomacy here, that leaves Kerry and his ilk in the dust on the road to nowhere.

You’re right in most states, but my Senators are Corzine and Lautenberg. I can send them letters or wash my car. Either will influence them just as much.
