LOS ANGELES (AP) - District Attorney Steve Cooley faced growing criticism Thursday for calling jurors who acquitted actor Robert Blake "incredibly stupid" and speaking out about the pending murder case against music producer Phil Spector.
Jurors demanded an apology while experts said the remarks were unprofessional.
"I'm just disgusted," said Blake jury foreman Thomas Nicholson. "It appears to me he has no faith in the jury selection. After all, it was his people who helped choose us." Loyola University law professor Laurie Levenson said Cooley's comments were a major lapse in judgment.
"I can understand why his office is frustrated," she said. "But it's much more of an embarrassment for him than the jurors."
Addressing reporters Tuesday, Cooley defended the prosecutor who lost the Blake case and said he was stunned jurors found the actor not guilty of killing his wife and of one count of soliciting her murder.
The panel deadlocked on a second solicitation charge that was then dismissed by a judge.
"Quite frankly, based on my review of the evidence, he is as guilty as sin. He is a miserable human being," Cooley said.

Stupid is as stupid does.
I can't say whether or not the jurors were stupid. But, the two I saw were certainly two I wouldn't want sitting in judgment over me. "Weird and goofy" fail to adequately describe their preening for the press.
Jury foreman on the left.
You know, they look stupid.
I always did like Cooley. Smart guy.
Those jurors are stupid....the whole lot of them.
"He couldn't have shot her...he left his gun in the restaurant!"
Er, ah, Steve -- you selected them.
Dumb and Dumber
Cooley on Fox 11 saying three jurors shopping different deals this week...
I understand that these were were rejected for jury consideration for the OJ trial because they were considered to be too stupid.
Yeah, well Cooley was stupid to have even brought this case.
Ha! Another O.J. moment? hah, we got us a convoy going here.
Okay, I'm sorry you're stupid. It's a real shame.
I guess the publishing industry is kind of desperate.
Isn't there a 60 or 90 'No profit' rule or such for jurors?
The jury foreman had sat on a previous murder trial, if my memory serves me correctly.
I, as a juror, watch a good defense attorney blow smoke and flash mirrors, then a very good DA break the mirrors and blow the smoke away.
The little attention I paid to this trial and based on what my juror instructions were on Burden of Proof, I agree with this jury.
Don't file the charge if you cant make the case. How long did these glory hounds grandstand before they finally came to trial??
Basically, their case was crap, and even if they could have proved it beyond a reasonable doubt (which they didn't), this was clearly a case crying out for jury nullification....
They should have negotiated Manslaughter, out in 4 years.
