LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles police will look into an error made by a K-9 explosive detection unit at Los Angeles International Airport earlier this week that prompted officials to evacuate a terminal.
Officials say the LAPD unit left a bag containing explosive powder unattended after a training exercise Tuesday.
An FBI agent later noticed the bag and alerted airport police. When an airport K-9 officer and his dog arrived to examine the bag, the bomb-sniffing dog failed to detect the explosives. An airport police officer then opened the bag in front of passengers and, after seeing what looked like pipe bombs insider, ordered an evacuation.
Detectives called to the area determined that the K-9 unit from their department had used the bag in their practice session.
John Miller, the chief of the LAPD's counterterrorism bureau, says the incident was "unfortunate" and that the department has adopted two new procedures for such anti-terrorism exercises.

well, it was training materials...they are going to use high powered stuff for training....
especially pipe bombs....a lot of kids blow themselves up playing aroudn with those...
would be nice for fellow agencies to know they are training, dontchya think?

Imagine if this had happened at the El Al Counter/Gate.
Those bozos would be staring down the barrel of several guns.
Cop Jim: "Bob, did you pick up the bomb when we left?"
Cop Bob: "No Jim, I thought you had it!"
Dog cop: "Woof! I didn't see it either. Woof!"

There seems to be a story that comes out every month or so, including ones where they leave the bomb on the plane.
Sometimes I wonder if the #1 criterium for law enforcement and "intelligence" wotk is being a total $%#@ up.
the problem is...the agencies have never addressed the report that was issued right before the El Al attack.

The more the police are militarized, the more dangerous they are to ordinary citizens. One of the Cincinnati area cops left/lost his gun in a courthouse restroom last week and hasn't been fired or jailed. Want to bet how an ordinary ccw permit holder would be treated in that circumstance ?
We need more Sheriff Andy types and no more gung-ho over-aggresive Delta Force wannabees.

Yes, they did. I worry because I'm due to rotate home next month, but occurances such as this give me reason to fear our own system.
