Macedonian does not mean Greek - they were a different ethnic group. In the time of Alexander's father, they were considered half-civilized savages who lived on the edge of the Greek world.
The present-day Greeks have also had considerable racial intermixing since Ptolemy's (or Cleopatra's) day, with Turks, Normans, etc.
The large barbarians from the north (Germania) invaded the Shore People who hailed from Asia Minor--twice (once as "Dorians"). Things got mixed up.
