A malicious prosecution, with no hope of conviction just to cost the homeowner tens of thousands for bail and attorneys is common. A favorite is to require the police to search the property and confiscate all weapons for evidence and then announce that fact in the news, release the burglars on OR, and give them immunity for testimony against the homeowner.
