Joan K. loses fight with kids (Kennedys and alcohol)

Joan Kennedy's embarrassing alcohol-fueled collapse on a Hub sidewalk has sparked an emotional legal custody battle pitting the ex-socialite against her three chldren.

Barnstable Probate and Family Court Judge Robert E. Terry yesterday ruled the 68-year-old former wife of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy Jr. is a danger to herself and incompetent, a source close to the case said.

Terry extended by 90 days an order giving her children custody over her finances, health care, housing and other personal decisions and - in what one source called an ``unprecedented move,'' set a full trial to decide whether that guardianship should be made ``permanent'' and "irrevocable.''

Joan Kennedy, who has waged a long, public battle with alcoholism, took the stand to fight against her children - U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.), Edward M. Kennedy Jr. and Kara Kennedy Allen - keeping control.

Her son Edward argued in favor of the guardianship extension.

Augustus Wagner Jr., a Hyannis lawyer who represents the Kennedy children, confirmed the custody order was extended but would not discuss details.

Joan Kennedy was hospitalized March 28 for injuries suffered when she was found on the sidewalk along Beacon Street in Boston by a local resident.

She is a "danger to herself and incompetent."

Teddy is a danger to others and a U.S. Senator. Out of the two, Teddy is the one who should be locked up.

If she ever needs a feeding tube, she's doomed.

"Unprecedented" suggests that the Kennedy machine told
the court what it wanted, precendents to the contrary
notwithstanding. Teddy knows how to kill and get away
with it.

Joan needed to get out of Mass long ago. Too late now.

But what is her quality of life? Would anyone want to live like that?

Joan's a public drunk. You don't think her kids should look out for her?

So is Teddy...and a murderer to boot. Double standard by the kids.

Whatever you think of him, Ted Kennedy is no longer a public drunk.

You're right, Sinkspur. It has been some time since teddy-boy made a public spectacle of himself while under the influence.

Of course, tomorrow is another day.

All the years of Teddy's despicable antics have greatly contributed to Joan's condition.

Thanks, sinkspur, I wasn't sure what it meant. Sure makes me think her ex-husband is one too, especially while doing whatever he does in the Senate.
