THE 60 MINUTES TRADITION CONTINUES--
Nealz Nuze ^ | April 14, 2005 | Neoliberalnot

Last night on '60 Minutes Wednesday' (yes, it's still on the air, despite the forged documents fiasco) they kicked off the show with a story about the shooting of Giuliana Sgrena's car in Iraq. That's the communist journalist from Italy whose freedom was bought from her Islamic captors by the Italian government. By the way, she is a communist and she works for a communist newspaper, something you won't hear too much of from the mainstream media (although 60 Minutes did get that right.)

At any rate, the piece last night by Scott Pelley included an interview with Giuliana Sgrena. In it, she continued to advance the lie that the U.S. Army attacked her on purpose, and that the official Army response was a lie. She says they weren't speeding, that there were no warning lights and that the troops just started shooting for no reason. What a crock (more on that in a minute.)

In giving Giuliana Sgrena a platform to spew her leftist hatred against the United States, CBS and 60 Minutes continue their America-bashing tradition. The overall impression left from the broadcast last night is that the Coalition troops shot at Giuliana Sgrena's car on purpose and killed the Italian intelligence agent on purpose. But wait...there's a bit of news.

NBC is reporting that a preliminary report from the joint U.S.-Italian investigation concludes that the American soldiers did nothing wrong, and the Italians failed to coordinate the rescue with the U.S. Military. That would also mean they didn't stop at the checkpoint.

In other words, Giuliana Sgrena lied, and CBS was right there to give her lie as much coverage as possible! A communist with a political agenda? Imagine our surprise!

Does anyone have a list of the sponsors of that horrible show so that we could start putting pressure on them?

I must be naive, I actually had high hopes only to have them dashed.

Given that the Italian whore is a communist I could care less about her.

Actually I'm saddened that a decent man died saving her life while she, one who supports the insurgents, lived!

Poor shooting on the part of US troops is what the focus of the 60 minutes story should have been.

GI'S CLEARED IN ITALIAN'S DEATH

U.S. soldiers reportedly have been cleared of wrongdoing in the shooting of an Italian journalist and an intelligence agent last month in Baghdad. U.S. military officials told NBC News that a joint American-Italian investigation found the soldiers acted properly in firing on a car bearing a just-freed hostage, journalist Giuliana Sgrena, and an intelligence officer, Nicola Calipari.

The car was about 130 yards from a checkpoint when the soldiers flashed their lights to get it to stop. They fired warning shots when the car was within 90 yards of the checkpoint, but at 65 yards, they used deadly force. Calipari was killed and Sgrena wounded.

Leslie Stahl said last night, in her interview by Chris Matthews on HARDBOILED, in reference to the types of investigations 60 Minutes does, "Its in our DNA".

She also:

(1) Bemoaned the lack of "CIVILITY" in political discourse recently.........

(2)..........and that the public didn't trust her (....and others of the MSM) anymore, along with........

(3).........the horrible conclusion that the public wasn't listening to her/them (ie. it is "dangerous" [Yes, she used the word 'dangerous'] for the public to NOT listen to the reporting of the MSM).........

(4)........and that we don't get our news from one source any more and instead from places like the internet (ie. they don't set the agenda anymore).

Quite the interview. Anybody else catch it?

I saw just a small part of that where they had an ex-soldier saying that our checkpoint policies were seriously flawed and that his unit improved the situation dramatically simply by installing a pilfered Iraqi stop sign at their checkpoint. He claimed Iraqis often don't even realize they are approaching a checkpoint and are confused about what to do, but that the regular stop sign is something they recognize and respond to. Can anyone comment on this?

Didn't she say in her original story that her car "was destroyed", yet, there appears to have only been a single bullet hole through the windshield?

Here is her interview:

Q: Did the Americans continue to fire when your car had come to a halt?

A: Our car was destroyed.

Q: So what did this security agent do when he heard the firing?

A: When the driver said "they're attacking us", one of the [agents] tried to say we're Italians but it was impossible to get out of the car because the car was under this rain of fire.

Sorry, I turn the channel when LS shows up.

I read her book about covering the Reagan White House. She recounts that when Reagan called the USSR an "evil empire", she and another Reporterette were so "frightened" they clutched each others hands for support. The book is basically a Hatchet job on RR.

Never watched her since.

"........and that we don't get our news from one source any more and instead from places like the internet"

There's a book called Republic.com by leftist law professor Cass Sunstein that makes this same complaint. Sunstein longs for the days when Americans passively imbibed a shared news perspective delivered by a Walter Cronkite. (By the way, this book had laudatory dust-jacket blurbs from Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton.) Sunstein also was desperately seeking legal ways to control Internet speech to make sure that no conservative argument ever goes unrebutted by a leftist argument. The Internet and Fox news are perceived as a very serious threat to their agenda, and they will do what they can to control or neutralize them.

To complete my thought; I forgot to mention that the same ex-soldier claimed that it is very difficult for soldiers, even sharpshooters, to aim at and hit the engine block of a moving vehicle.
