Hector Zaragoza walked out of the Huntsville "Walls" Unit early Thursday morning a free man. He didn't remain that way long.
Zaragoza, 28, stole a van which was parked near the bus station in Huntsville shortly after he was released from prison Thursday, and after a high-speed chase on Interstate 45, was apprehended in Madison County and arrested by officers from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
After completing a three-year sentence for driving while intoxicated and aggravated assault, Zaragoza was back in jail, this time facing charges of felony theft of a vehicle, evading arrest and operating a vehicle with a revoked license.
"One of the troopers in Madison County laid a spike strip down and it got all four of the tires," Huntsville Police Department Sgt. Gary Howze said Thursday afternoon. "I understand a portion of the chase was at about 10 miles per hour because he was running on the rims. He stopped in Madisonville at the 142-mile marker and gave up at that time."
Zaragoza went in front of a judge in Madison County, where he was charged with evading arrest and operating a vehicle with a revoked license. When he was brought back to Walker County, Justice of the Peace Janie Farris charged him with felony theft of a vehicle. All of that on a day when Zaragoza was scheduled to go home to El Paso.
"He had no obligation to the Texas prison system beyond today," Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesperson Michelle Lyons said. "He had done three years and was set to go home."

Talk about a loser.
Throw away the key this time. This scumbag has no business in society.
So much for rehabilitation.
Maybe he missed his boyfriend.
From the title of the article I thought this was going to be some weepy story about an ex-con that was having a hard time making it on the outside because of all us bigots.
You're on the right track. He wants to be incarcerated. It's not unusal. Three hots and a cot. No decisions to make.
He may be dumb, but he's smart enough to know he can't make it on the outside.
Or maybe he is afraid of someone on the outside.
Maybe he's going for that third strike?
