The Vietnam Vet who spit on Jane Fonda as she was signing her new book was the topic of debate in the news this week - should he have done it? Everyone said no, and I agree. However, I understand the anger behind it.
Many of our troops experienced the same thing when they came home from the war. Just last year my husband, Duane, who is a decorated Vietnam Vet, was speaking to a group about the war in Iraq as compared to the Vietnam war and one man shared during the Q & A that he was one of the soldiers who had been spit on by Americans when he got home. As Duane expressed his sorrow and understanding, the man wept. Needless to say, you could hear a pin drop in the crowd. Everyone got it.
I don't think Jane Fonda gets it. I know she said she's sorry recently for some of the things she did, but she didn't apologize to Vietnam Vets, especially the POWs who suffered longer as a result of her anti- war activities. She says she still hasn't changed her view of that war.
I don't know if this generation gets it either, except for those whose dads were in Vietnam perhaps. Our whole country needs to be reminded about our shameful treatment of these soldiers. Reminded about things such as their having to build their own memorial wall. That the first year's observation was not attended formally by our government. That many of them still roam the street, homeless, having never recovered from the effects of the war and their 'homecoming'.
Can you imagine putting your life on the line for your country and coming home to this? These veterans did not choose to serve in an unpopular war. They were soldiers just like the soldiers who fought in wars past or are fighting today...serving their country.
Vietnam Vets have never really been thanked adequately by our country, with the kind of national apology that can help healing come to many. While I do not condone the action of the Vet who spit on Fonda, I believe it shows there are wounds that still have not healed. Until this happens, make it more than just a slogan on a bumper sticker - Thank a Vietnam Vet every chance you get.

He should have punched her in the face.
You don't spit on traitors, rather you hang them.
As in the words of Hank Jr.'s song "A country boy can survive"
"I'd like to spit some beechnut in that dude's eye, and shootem with my ole' 45."
Jeff (Pro spitter of the likes of Hanoi Jane Fonda)
" I don't think Jane Fonda gets it. I know she said she's sorry recently for some of the things she did"
I don't think she is sorry for any of the things she did - she is simply sorry that her poor behavior has caught up with her and has resulted the comtempt that many Americans feel towards her.
BTW: Is there a video of the act?
I'm fixing to try limewire, see if they have it.
Jeff
How 'bout 'You spit on traitors and then you hang them'?
I'm old fashioned enough that spitting in a womans face doesn't do it for me. Now Tom Hayden would be another matter all together.
Disgusting behavior by those opposed to Fonda, simply stooping to her level. True patriots show class. Wisdom dictates that Fonda be ignored and allowed to fade into oblivion. As your mama surely taught you, two wrongs do not make a right.
Jane was just whoring her book. She got off lucky. She deserved to be s*it on, not just spit on.
I was spat upon by some unwashed hippy whore in Atlanta
before I ever made it to the O'Seas Replacement station.
The airport cop told me to forget it-because if I responded -as she deserved --he would arrest me.Neither
he nor her knew -or cared wha tmy MOS was. All they saw
was the uniform. Earlier while at Ft. Carson I did have the
pleasure of several less than normal Medical Clinic days
thanks to Hanoi Jane and her stupid Sick in for Peace --
plan to protest the War.Also saw her bodily carried from
the Little Wheel Club and told not to come back to bother us in our off duty R&R. Nobody wanted to be associated with our enemy (even before she went to parlevouse with the enemy in Hanoi.should he have spat upon her? I can only say
I agree with his seniments. She earned it. But the enemy
dumb as they are will spin it to make her seem a Saint and
the Crazy Freaking Vietnam Vets an identifiable group who-
like true Christians are someone our modern society has some right to revile and abhor.
Thanks for serving in the Military. It is because of people like you, that make this planet a safer place for my Wife, Son, and myself. You are a GREAT AMERICAN!!!
Jeff
And what he did was classy. He could have punched her, called her vile names, dropped his drawers and displayed his nasty bits, gotten into a nasty argument. He could have killed her. But he didn't; rather, he gave Jane Fonda what vets have literally been getting for years--a gooey glob of saliva right in the kisser. It's perfect. It means that we've finally turned the corner, that the "anti-establishment" is now the establishment and it's their turn to reap the rewards of their youthful corruption and bad decisions. It's really just chickens come home to roost (or "karma", as Jane might prefer). Don't think of it as a 'conservative' or 'marine' spitting on Jane Fonda; think of it as the 60's generation finally starting to reap what they've sown.
I would pay to spit on Jane Fonda, and I wasn't even born when she was committing treason!
The vet should not have spit in Fonda's face. That kind of behavior is just not acceptable. I'm a Navy veteran, having served six years during the Vietnam War. I have nothing but contempt for Fonda, and others like her, but would never resort to spitting in a woman's face. I uderstand the vet's anger, however, and I want to say "thank you" to him for his service. I lost far too many friends in that war, all much better and more honorable than the pampered human trash that spat on us once.
Ditto!!! Then shoot her! Then hang her! She's a TRAITOR!
But, never waste spit on a piece of sh*t!
