(FORT BRAGG) - The prosecution has rested its case in the sentencing phase of the court-martial of an Army sergeant convicted of murdering his fellow soldiers.
Seven witnesses testified, following the 15 that testified on Monday.
Defense attorneys are expected to call their witnesses Wednesday. The defense admits Sergeant Hasan Akbar carried out the attack, but claims he was mentally unstable at the time.
The judge in the case says he expects deliberations to begin on Thursday. Meanwhile, jurors have been sent home for the day with copies of Akbar's diary and a mitigation report.
Witnesses detail physical, emotional trauma of 101st attackd
FORT BRAGG, N.C. Soldiers who survived Sergeant Hasan Akbar's March 2003 grenade and rifle attack on his fellow soldiers testified that they still suffer physical and emotional effects from the trauma.
By the end of the day, 15 soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division brigade had testified about their wounds and feelings.
Captain Gregory Holden says he has shrapnel wounds to at least 13 parts of his body, including a bone-mangling wound to his left leg that required him to wear a painful external brace for months.
Captain Dexter McLendon says he's more paranoid since the attack and has sought psychological help.
Yesterday's testimony came as prosecutors opened the sentencing phase of Akbar's court-martial. Akbar was convicted last week of two counts of premeditated murder and three counts of attempted premeditated murder.
Akbar faces a possible death sentence, or life in prison.
The hearing continues today.
Will send out another update at the end of the duty day.
UPDATE PING
I hope this os over by Friday.
What possible defense does this POS have? Insanity? Allah made me do it?
He should have been hanged like a rabid dog the minute they caught him.
Thanks!
No blindfold, either.
Thanks for the update. It will be interesting to see what sort of witnesses the defense produces tomorrow.

Amen and Amen!
George Washington denied a firing squad for Major John André, a far more noble adversary, and the same should be denied for this slime.
A nice pigskin noose, stretching nicely...?
BTW, the traditional blindfold is for the benefit of the executioners, not the condemned. Many don't like to look into the eyes of those they are killing.
Works for me!
I notice the traitor Major John André worked undercover for a Brit named Clinton. Wonder what the connection might be?
hmmm...well, back with Major John André and Sir Henry Clinton, it was Benedict Arnold who was the traitor. In our modern times, I don't think there's a Benedict Arnold or a Major John André, nor a Sir Henry. The rest is left to the reader. ;-)
Another good page about John André is at http://www.ushistory.org/march/bio/andre.htm
He's fascinated me, and his journal is a treasure. He seemed a very competent, interesting, and honourable man. It's a shame he had to be executed; I understand the difficulty of Washington's action.
And then there's this pig...who is supposedly an "American"... the disgust I feel for him is as strong as my admiration for André.

Instead use 22 shorts aimed low, and with very slow fire - in order to prolong the SOB's agony!
