SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- An Australian company has been given approval to begin work on a cemetery where bodies will be buried vertically to save space and minimize impact on the environment, a spokesman said Thursday.
Tony Dupleix, director of Palacom, the company given permission for the cemetery, said the plan would involve no-frills burials, using a simple body bag rather than a casket.
"When you die, you are returned to the earth with a minimum of fuss and with no paraphernalia that would affect the environment," he said.
The cemetery, proposed for a field in Derrinallum, 110 miles west of the city of Melbourne, would feature 10-foot holes, Dupleix said. It reportedly is the first cemetery in Australia offering the option of being buried standing up.
Anna Jamieson, of the Darlington Cemetery Trust which will manage the cemetery, said the plots would be ideal for environmentally minded people, but conceded it was unlikely to replace the time-honored horizontal interments.
"If you are interested in the environment, it's beautiful land on the Western District plains facing Mount Elephant," she said. "Some people will think it's great but other people might prefer a traditional burial."
This just seems awfully morbid to do a press release on.
It just wouldn't be comfortable.
yeah--its gonna be standing room only
;-P
can't be "laid to rest" if you're standing upright, too creepy. Maybe they'll have a truck load of coffins with some sort of machinery that will just dump or shoot the coffins into their pre-dug slots in the ground. Hopefully no one will bury their loved ones in this new space saving cemetery, just doesn't seem right...
So much for 'Rest in Peace.'
I presume people will have the option to be buried head up or head down....
my post was a pun
Standing for that long would play havoc with my back...
yes, I knew that...just giving my opinion on the subject. Just read the article again, no coffins, just body bags so my coffin-shooting machine is out, just a body-bag shooter. It all sounds gross to me was my point basically.
Uh-uh. If they start doing this up here, I'm going to insist on an above-ground crypt. How else are the cemetery staffers going to be able to kiss my ass?
I'm sure it won't be very popular...
or so I would hope....
...GEE, can dead people still stand???
Hell, they vote for democrats---why not?
;-)
Personally my orders are to be cremated and the ashes used in making garden gnomes to haunt my surviving relatives. ;O)
You'd have to alternate them, to save space.
....that's true!
Australia is short of space? Puh-lease.
