DULUTH, Ga. Townspeople who joined in the three-day search for runaway bride Jennifer Wilbanks are getting increasingly peeved that they still have not heard an apology from her.
Her attorney said Wilbanks plans to issue a statement Thursday.
Jose Armando Nino drives his lawnmower past a billboard with the likeness of runaway bride Jennifer Wilbanks in Duluth, Ga., Tuesday, May 3, 2005. Wilbanks, who had vanished Tuesday, April 26 after saying she was going out jogging, initially told authorities she was abducted. But she later admitted she took a cross-country bus trip to Albuquerque, N.M., to avoid her lavish, 600-guest wedding, which was to have taken place Saturday.
"She made a big mistake. She needs to come out and face it," said Ron Harris, owner of The Soda Shop in this Atlanta suburb, where most patrons were annoyed Wilbanks has been back in Georgia since Saturday but hasn't said a word about her disappearance.
Mayor Shirley Lasseter, who is considering a lawsuit to recoup the $40,000 to $60,000 cost of the search, said the community has clearly grown tired of waiting for Wilbanks.
"Now some of the sentiment is changing to, 'This is going on too long. This is pitiful."'
Wilbanks' attorney, Lydia J. Sartain, said her client is seeking professional help for her problems and is in no condition to speak. She said Wilbanks' written statement may not please everyone, but it will be all she can muster.
"She is not in it to please the public," Sartain said. "She wants the public to know that she is sorry, but she really is not well."
The 32-year-old Wilbanks touched off an extensive search last week when she vanished from her Duluth home four days before her scheduled 600-guest wedding.
She had taken a bus to Las Vegas and then Albuquerque, N.M., where she called authorities with a story about having been abducted. She later broke down and admitted it was simply a case of cold feet.
"She regrets the pain she caused her family, her fiance, her friends and the community who rallied to her aid," her attorney said.
Leading the 300 searchers were Duluth's police officers some of whom had to miss the funeral of a slain Atlanta officer Friday because they were called to help search for Wilbanks.
"Certainly I'd be interested in what she has to say," said police spokesman Maj. Don Woodruff. "I don't think any type of public apology will make a whole lot of difference where we're concerned. But I certainly think she owes an apology to the public for the expenditure of public money. It could have been avoided with one phone call."
District Attorney Danny Porter is investigating possible criminal charges against Wilbanks for falsely reporting a crime.
Wilbanks' attorney, a former prosecutor, said she respects Porter's obligation to investigate. Sartain said Wednesday that, at the request of Wilbanks, she called the mayor of Duluth to apologize.
If Wilbanks' statement does not include an apology for falsely claiming a Hispanic man had abducted her, she can expect to see protesters on her front lawn in the days to come. The group Hispanics Across America claims her remarks endangered Hispanic males across the country and contributed to discrimination; the group says it will stand outside her home until she apologizes.
Thanks! I needed another fix...
It angers me and I'm not her neighbor.
Where's the photoshopped pic of her that gives her the 'dingbat' eyes?
ping
You probably mean the .gif of the wagglies, but this one sorta works:
It disgusts me and I'm glad I'm not her neighbor.
Someone on another thread said she is not a runaway bride. She faked her own abduction. In other words, the abduction was not just a spur of the moment lie.
That might be the funniest thinkg I've ever seen on FR.
If the family had any savvy, within hours of Jennifer's return, they would have:
gone public with a profuse and heartfelt apology and thanked all the volunteers who searched and prayed for Jennifer,
acknowledged that Jennifer had caused the citizens of Duluth and law enforcement unnecessary work, long hours, overtime, etc.
offered to work with the authorities to find a way to reimburse the costs of the search and would contribute to a charity benefiting the police or search and rescue orgs
asked for privacy to heal
and told that gushing goober of a groom to shut up.
Public opinion would have been on the family's side and the city would have closed ranks around them.
Instead they have lawyered up and Mason has run amuck ,enjoying his 15 minutes of fame,
euphorically and creepingly talking about everything from their "pure, unbroken " non sex life to why he doesn't own socks.
The good people of Duluth were there for the family within hours, but, it takes the family days and consults with different lawyers, to say thanks via a written statement, to Duluth.
A day late and a dollar short comes to mind.
The fiance has apparently lost the contents of his "baggie" - he is wholly pw'd.
Aw, leave her alone. The woman is probably emotionally unstable anyway. I doubt she is capable of a "public statement".
I can understand why someone who lived in her town and helped in the search might be a little angry at her? But why people on this board? Who among you has been hurt by this woman?
This country has turned into one big Roman gallery (or Jerry Springer show).
We don't know the real reasons that she bolted but she does have the right to change her mind. If both still want to marry each other, so be it. Having said that, I'll add a bit more. I'm utterly fed up with people who make more of a wedding than they do of the marriage. Only God knows what's in a person's heart and no amount of posturing and preening before an audience is going to change that. So, let the couple sort it out and get on with whatever remains of their lives. either together or separately. Privately, I hope.
As for reparations--have the media kick in a small part of what the vultures made covering this debacle and that should be sufficient to take care of several more runaway brides.
Amen
me too, since we can't post about Laura Bush anymore.

Well said. I too believe she is mentally and emotionally unstable and should be cut all the slacj=k in the world.
The people of her town might have a standing in being a bit upset but they too should get over it.
And the Hispanic group saying they are going to stand in her front yard. What a but of small minded people.
Everyone just needs to get over it, get a life people.
