Passports are for external travel - now we are getting a passport to travel inside the USA. Nothing is changing, an id like a drivers license has been required to board an airplane for years. All this does is make sure that when you're getting a license that you're entitled to it.

True...but they are also an excellent form of second ID which is sometimes needed for banking, etc. and not just exclusively for foreign travel.
