'Green' Practices Put Wash. in the Red

SEATTLE — Seattle's new city hall and justice center have received awards for their environmentally sensitive design. But just two years after opening, both buildings are plagued with problems — and fixing them is going to cost taxpayers millions....(snip)

For example, the light-reflecting shelves in the building haven't worked -- intended to reduce electric bills, workers complain of glare. An oxygen-producing, rainwater-preserving "green roof" died and will have to be re-seeded with heartier plants. Boilers have exploded. Cops have trouble getting hot water to their locker rooms. Offices are too hot or too cold.

"Tenants are uncomfortable and we are wasting money heating and cooling air that is not reaching them," according to one city report....(snip)

One Tacoma middle school was expected to save 35 percent on energy (search), but it's actually using 25 percent more than a conventional building because boilers work harder to make the air fresh. On the up side, one high school in Redmond saves $20,000 a year on energy.

"If you look at it holistically, it's better for the community, it's better for our workers, it's better for our kids to build these buildings to environmental standards that will have long-lasting operational savings and environmental benefits," said Cliff Traisman of Washington Conservation Voters....(snicker and snip)

These are the clueless people. The blind who seek to rule over the one-eyed men.

Its the San Francisco of the Pacific Northwest. It explains the recent round of tax increases. They were wasting money already on dubious Green technology.

The outcome is irrelevant. Its the intentions that are important. Who cares if the living green roof falls in?

On the fun side, I hope Rush mentions this. I just love "In A Yugo".

"In June, Washington will become the first state to require all tax-funded buildings to be green. But with the results they've had so far, protecting the environment could break the bank."

Don't worry, the whacko dems will just raise everyone's taxes again to pay for this latest Washington State fiasco. How much higher can they raise the gasoline tax, I wonder?

And in the more sensible portions of eastern Washington, local governments will resort to painting their buildings some unpalatable shade of green.

Cops have trouble getting hot water to their locker rooms. Offices are too hot or too cold.

Wanna bet that there are also eco-friendly low-flow toilets that need 7 flushes to get the job done?

" 'green roof' died and will have to be re-seeded with heartier plants."

Wouldn't that be "hardier" plants?

If they really want to be "green", why don't they make all State offices outdoors?

They could just run phone lines to trees and set up desks and chairs outside on the lawn.If they like the outdoors so much ,they will love this.Workers can wear raincoats when it rains. No heating and cooling or lighting needed. Come on Seattle, lets get REALLY GREEN!
