Coalition Announces Capture of Zarqawi 'Key Associate'

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, May 7, 2005 – Multinational forces captured a "key associate" of Jordanian terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi Apr. 26 in a raid conducted in western Iraq, officials announced today.

Ghassan Muhammad Amin Husayn al-Rawi was described as the amir, or leader, of Rawah, Iraq. He is accused of coordinating meetings for senior members, helping move and set up meetings for al-Zarqawi in the Rawah region, and helping move foreign fighters and being "allegedly ... responsible for terrorist activity resulting in the murder of innocent Iraqis," Multinational Force Iraq officials said in a release.

Coalition forces conducted three consecutive late April raids to capture Ghassan Amin and his followers. In the first one, forces discovered a car-bomb factory three kilometers west of Rawah linked to Ghassan Amin.

Inside that warehouse, forces found four vehicles being prepared as car bombs, about 200 bags of ammonium phosphate, two DSKH 38/46 12.7 mm machine guns and ammunition. The coalition destroyed the warehouse and its contents.

In the second raid, two Ghassan Amin associates were captured, and the third one netted the amir himself.

According to statements provided by Iraqi Rawah residents, Ghassan Amin and his network terrorized the local citizens by stealing cars to convert into bombs and allegedly kidnapping Iraqis for profit to further support the purchase of weapons and ammunition.

"Ghassan Amin runs Rawah and nobody does anything without Ghassan Amin's approval," said one male who had been temporarily detained due to his proximity with Ghassan Amin during the third raid. "Ghassan Amin is well-known in Rawah, and it is well-known that he is part of the mujahadeen. Ghassan Amin destroyed the police station and the headquarters of the Islamic party of Rawah."

In a raid days before his capture, forces found several weapons caches buried near a farm belonging to Ghassan Amin. Because of the large amount, the weapons and ammunition were destroyed in place.

The release noted that Ghassan Amin admitted to meeting al-Zarqawi once in January and allowed the terrorist leader to reside with one of his relatives for about five days.

"Iraqi Security and Coalition forces continue to capture or kill high level terrorists associated with Zarqawi, seize and destroy large amounts of bomb making material, and prevent terrorist attacks on a regular basis," the MNFI release stated. "The capture of Ghassan Amin removes a significant leader of terrorism from the now safer streets of Rawah."

Seems the last 20 or 30 we've caught over there are described again and again as close or key aides. I no longer believe it.

Well sure, after one is caught then someone gets the key promotion.

" I no longer believe it."

What don't you believe and why not? Don't you think they are 'key' aides? Why not? Do you think this is all made up?

Why?

Zarqawi must have a bigger entourage than Michael Jackson.

You may need to come by here and help us all out with AQ ranking. We need to know if this is a worthy catch.

I'm glad they got this guy, but the one who I'm going to get real excited about is Zarqawi. I want his head on a platter....spike, whatever. LOL Just as long as they chop it off. I want him to go through what he put all those innocent people through.

LOL!

There's definitely truth to the "we take them out, and they promote another" but if we just keep taking them out, Abu the cook will be Zarqawi's right-hand-man, and that would be sweet.

They found "...about 200 bags of ammonium phosphate..."
Paint me ghoulish green, but ammonium phosphate is useless in IEDs or for other terrorist activities and is only good for fertilizer. Ammonium nitrate, or perchlorate would be another matter, but phosphate? Why even bother mentioning it?

Just like in Hamas last year when the Israelis were killing the leaders as fast as they could be elected. It got to the point where being elected as their new leader came with a stick on bullseye and deed to your very own burial plot.

I bet you this guy will be released. If he has that much power (wasta) in his community then somebody up high will come to bat for him. I just don't think they will do the right thing and kill this SOB. He will be back in the community terrorizing it and killing Americans and Iraqis.

According to this site, it is not only non-explosive, it is non-flammable and used primarly as a fertilizer and fire retardant. They may as well have had dirt.

Maybe they found Zarqawi's gardener, who at this stage in the game may very well be his right hand man.

It could be a problem if mixed with bleach. It would make chlorine gas. Of course, there's the possibility that either the substance was misidentified in the article, or that the terrorists don't know the difference between ammonia compounds.

It's all relative. If someone planned even one deadly terrorist attack, then they're "important".

What I'd like to know is the breakdown of ideologically vs monetarily driven enemy. I have an impression that the enemy "officers" are religious nuts, while their hired thugs are drug-addicted losers who can't hold a real job (Fallujah was reportedly littered with syringes from the enemy shooting-up).
