That might be a little harsh. As a Catholic who certainly has failings, I am counting on a merciful God.
It's one thing to suffer from human frailty, quite another to engage in the process of furthering evil in the world.
Frailty is understandable, purposeful slander and falsehoods are not.

I had an interesting talk with an unusually nice muslim fellow I worked with once. He was eating an apple on the first day of Ramadan and I asked him about it. He looked scared and said "Because I'm a Baaaad muslim." He went on to explain that the penance for it was to feed a poor person for 60 days, and if you didn't do that it was 2 poor people for 90 days, etc. and how you could never catch up. I said "Good thing God is Merciful," and I left, but I thought as I was leaving that it is at best an open question whether HIS god is merciful, even though they say it all the time.
