A published report says Senator Ted Kennedy has received tax breaks on his Washington home, even though he does not qualify for the deduction.
Kennedy's staff tells the Boston Herald that the senator never applied for the tax break and apparently received it in error. A spokeswoman says Kennedy plans to reimburse the District of Columbia government for the money.
A review of tax and real estate records by the Kansas City Star found that Kennedy was one of 22 senators who took the so-called Homestead Exemption in 2003 and 2004.
But the deduction is meant only for homeowners who call D.C. their principal residence, and Kennedy remains a Massachusetts resident.
He reportedly stood to save about $7,700 this year on the tax bill for his $4.5 million dollar Washington home.
When Ted Kennedy does it, it's a "Gaffe."
When you or I do it, it's a "Felony!"
A guy that advocates increasing taxes but then gets reductions himself! A typical contradictory liberal!
Funny how the govt doesn't tend to make any errors in my favor.
I guess they'll drop their "investigation" into Rick Santorum's "tax gaffe" as well then?
this story will probably drown with the MSM.
Very convenient Gaffe. You ever notice how these guys are never involved in a Gaffe where they end up overpaying.
And just who were the other 21, I wonder...
Gee, could all of us just tell the taxman that every $7,700 shortfall in payment is merely some minor 'gaffe'???? hardly....
And just how exactly does one ACCIDENTALLY claim a deduction that is explicitly provided for the home of one's LEGAL RESIDENCE???? Everyone who deals with a 2nd home (not me, unfortunately) has to know there are fundamental tax issues regarding which home is claimed as the primary residence. WHAT A SCAM!
Ted in Neck Brace photo is mandatory in any Ted Kennedy story.
an amount considerably less then his open bar tab at the Metropolitan Grill, his favorite local watering hole.
Whaaa, thazz jush an honesht MISHTAKE (hic!)
Someone, if not the Submarine Commander himself, had to make application for homestead exemption.
This isn't a gaffe, it's a fraud.
Which, IIRC, is the same excuse he made when he killed Mary Jo Kopechne.
My guess: his accountant filled it in w/o disclosing it to him. He simply signed the forms w/o complete review. Yes, he is responsible for the error, but it probably was not done with his knowledge or concurrance.

Who here at FR hasn't had this problem?
My city is always trying to give me $7,700 or 10,000 or more. Its a real problem turning away all the money they send me.
