YOu could not stop me from fighting, or otherwise personally physically being involved in defending my country, regardless of how many times in the past that I had protected it.

Every generation has to raise individuals who are willing to fight for their society. If tired old men are the only ones willing to fight, then they raised a nation that won't live long past their death. Asking a small number of people to carry the load every time the country gets into hot water isn't fair or necessary.
