Romanowski Says He Dodged NFL Drug Policy

DENVER (AP) --

Bill Romanowski says he stayed one step ahead of the NFL's drug policy during his 16-year career, always taking nutritional supplements that the league had not yet banned.

"As soon as they found out that something could be tested for, I stopped taking it. I didn't want that embarrassment, but I pushed that envelope ethically and morally because if I could take something that would help me perform better and it wasn't on the list, I was going to take it," Romanowski said in an interview published Tuesday in the Rocky Mountain News.

"I had two criteria: Would it hurt me? And would I test positive?"

"In the end, there's been some embarrassment at what I had to deal with," he said.

He said he took supplements because he was "insecure."

Well, if he wasn't taking banned supplements, then he wasn't taking banned supplements. Ethically, I don't see a problem with taking something and then discontinuing use when it's banned.

I've disliked Romanowski ever since he spit on a Carolina Panther player in 1998 or 1999. As far as I'm concerned, he might have been a good player, but he sucked as a human being.

I wish Bill Frist would display similar savvy in making Senate rules work in our favor.

I stand corrected.

Either way, my opinion of the man remains unchanged.

a good example is that whole ugly trial about him punching the guy in practice and ending his career.

"your honor, he pushed me from behind, so naturally I had to defend myself, and that's why I ended his NFL career, robbing him of potential millions.

You may be thinking of the time he put a hit on Kerry Collins (Carolina) in the pre-season and broke his jaw. Everything about that hit was dirty. It was a late hit with the top of the helmet straight into Collins left jaw. It was very much a "Tatum-like" hit, only far less legal.

Romo a bastard? Sure.

Also and undeniably awesome linebacker destined for the Football Hall of Fame.

Yeah, I'd mixed the two events.

I still think Romanowski was a loser - on and off the field.

Tatum's hit on Stingley was not flagged, nor should it have been.
