Feinstein targets agricultural workers. Senator plans to introduce an industry-specific bill, rather than a sweeping measure on immigration.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Tuesday that she ... plans to introduce her own measure to provide a path toward legalization only for longtime undocumented agriculture workers.
Feinstein, D-Calif., said any new guest-worker program – even one requiring employees to eventually return to their home country – would be a "magnet for illegal immigration" and something she could not support.

Under Feinstein's idea, which hasn't yet been finalized, longtime undocumented agricultural workers would get a "blue card," allowing them to continue to work in agriculture. After a period of years of continued agricultural work, they would be entitled to trade in their blue card for a "green card."
Feinstein's comments came in an interview after the immigration and terrorism subcommittees held a hearing Tuesday afternoon on the border-security implications of immigration policy.

At the hearing, Asa Hutchinson, a former undersecretary of homeland security, urged the panel to first put workable border security and workplace enforcement systems in place and then consider a guest-worker program.
A prerequisite for a new worker program, Hutchinson said, must be the need to "satisfy the American public that we are capable of securing our borders."
And Hutchinson said people in other countries have to believe they will have a two- thirds chance of being caught if they attempt to enter the United States illegally, a deterrent that is not the case now.
And, Hutchinson said, they have to believe they will be detained.

Feinstein did suggest at the hearing that senators look into raising the number of immigrants who can come into the country legally each year.

There is nothing new here, the SAW program in the mid 80s did the same thing. The result was as soon as the illegal aliens in agg received their valid immigration cards they left agg for better jobs in construction or the service industry. (I am sure all of us would do the same)
This created a labor shortage in agg into which an entire new generation of illegal aliens rushed into fill the vacuum. Proposals like this always result in more illegal immigration. IMHO the only program that will help is a non-immigrant guest worker program with no link to formal immigration. Guest workers could apply for permanent residence status while working as a guest worker, but they would have to wait in line like everyone else.

yes, what a timely time to bulk up the vote and she is definitely running for re-election, but apparently she doesn't understand magnetic fields. a guest worker program would be a magnet for illegal immigration? how does she explain the giant flow right now? how weak.
Neither can I! Remember the illegal alien sweeps in Temeculah, California where a dozen border patrol agents rounded up about 400 illegal aliens in about 10 days? Asa was the guy who shut those down. Here is an audio link to the John and Ken Show Archives which show what a weasel the guy is. This was a town hall meeting put on by another weasel on this topic, Rep. Darrell Issa. This would be pretty funny (if it was not so sad) because the crowd gives these quislings a tough time.
Time for a conservative to come forward and end this dinosaur's political career...

I agree with you. People can't (and don't want to) do that kind of work indefinitely.
I think the following (from Victor Davis Hanson) needs to get more attention.

Remember, back when we were assured it was a one-time amnesty, which would be coupled with tougher enforcement.
This Orange County resident hasn't noticed any difference, between parties and administrations.
I know how popular it is to blame everything on Clinton, but Bush has been in office over four years.
He is responsible and he stands firmly for easing movement of people; call it by any name you like.
The chance for doing anything meaningful is rowing, as more and more states get their small share of what California (and Texas, Florida, etc.) have had for decades.
As for raids on companies: I think discussing it is a oke, cuz it doesn't happen, to any meaningful amount.
Not under any recent President. But my memory only goes back 50 years, so maybe somebody else remembers a raid on a company, a farm, a construction site, etc.
Too bad it's not a requirement for ALL drivers.
