DETROIT (AP) A federal judge sentenced a former East Detroit Public Schools official to 12 months and one day in prison for his role in a bribery and embezzlement scheme.
Frank Brasza, the district's former maintenance director, pleaded guilty in June 2004 to one count of conspiracy to commit racketeering.
U.S. District Judge Patrick Duggan on Tuesday also ordered Brasza, 63, of Rochester Hills, to pay $225,000 in restitution to the Macomb County district.
From 1990 to 2002, Brasza aided the conspiracy by approving "invoices which overbilled the district in excess of $1,500,000 at or about the same time he received free services from many of the vendors submitting false and excessive invoices," Assistant U.S. Attorney John Engstrom said in a statement.
Brasza eventually cooperated with investigators and testified against some of the 19 other people charged in connection with the scandal, Engstrom said.
Detroit depresses me.
