How is Owens one of Bush's "most controversial" nominations, as stated in this article? The republicans should have just changed this rule long ago. It's procedural, most Americans want judges to have a vote by the full Senate, and it's not worth all the hand wringing that's been going on.

By comparison, Republicans blocked 69 of President Clinton's judicial nominees during his two terms, Democratic senators pointed out.

Blocked? In what way? Is he including all judicial nominees that were not approved even in a floor vote in addition to those that didn't get out of committee? Democrats just can't get it throught their heads that they are the minority now.

With strong backing from the White House, Frist wants to ensure that Bush's nominees to the federal bench get "a fair up-or-down vote" on the Senate floor, with a simple majority of the 100 senators deciding the matter, instead of allowing Democrats to block nominees through filibusters, which require 60 votes to break. Republicans say filibuster threats mean that, for practical purposes, a "supermajority" of 60 votes is required to confirm the nominees, rather than the traditional 51 votes.

Rephrased, ever so slightly ...

With strong backing from the White House, Frist wants to ensure that Bush's nominees to the federal bench get "a fair up-or-down vote" on the Senate floor, with a simple majority of the 100 senators deciding the matter, instead of allowing Democrats to block nominees through refusing to vote. The Senate rule referred to as cloture requires 60 votes to get to the vote over an objection. The Democrats assert that a "supermajority" of 60 votes is required to either confirm or reject the nominees, rather than the 51 votes contemplated under the Constitution.

If it passes, "it will embolden the appointers to having greater latitude in the nominees that will be submitted," Specter said.

So what's the problem? The President can nominate anyone he chooses. Likewise, the Senate can reject or approve any of the nominees they wish.

The Demorats put up a good, if pointless, fight, with heavy MSM backing, but in the end, they are in the minority. And, I for one, am quite happy they are.

Well wuddayaknow! The Republicans gained a few points on my "Respect-o-Meter" today. It's still well below where it's been in the past, but if they keep acting like LEADERS that could change quite quickly. ;)

Why do they bother with the cloture vote? Why not just move that the nominee be voted on right then? If the nominee gets 51 votes the matter is settled!

Can we not trust 51 Senators to reject any nominee that is truly objectionable?

There was a quib on today's Err America affiliated radio station by Jumpim' Jim "benedict" Jeffords, which he basically stated, "95% of the prez's nominees have been confirmed!" I kept thinking, "So Friggin What?!" Why won't you allow an up or down vote on the remaining 5%?

Every time I hear those PRIX Jeffords, Leahy, Dean, on the radio I wanna drop kick the thing into the pond!

I even called the radio station to see if I could ask the news director why he wouldn't air an opposing view ....Oh wait, I forget this is SOCIALIST, WACKO, LOONEYLEFT, CURTAINWEARIN' HIPPEE DOPESMOKIN', BLEEDINASSLIBERAL, CIVILUNIONIZED, SHOVEITDOWNYOURTHROAT, LEAKYLEAHY, JIMJUMPIN, BERNIEBIRDBRAINED, SCREAMINDEANVILLE Vermont!!

Could it be that the republican have a Democrat on there side? Someone that is leaving, etc? I am of the opinion that we have a Ace in the hole! With or without the Rino's or moderates of each party? Hillary may need a pardon soon?
