Dog Shot At Strip Mall Parking Lot Man Says He Felt Threatened By Animal

DEARBORN, Mich. -- A dog was shot in the parking lot of a Dearborn strip mall on Monday, police said.
A 46-year-old man was walking near the Pier 1 Imports store at the strip mall on Michigan Avenue when he encountered the animal, police said.
The man, who said he felt threatened by the nearly 80-pound Rotweiller-mix, pulled out his gun and fired a shot at the dog, striking it in the leg, police said.
Some witnesses in the area, however, said that the dog appeared to be harmless, Local 4 reported.
Police said prior to the shooting, the dog's owner had contacted animal control to report that it had somehow escaped from the yard.
The dog was taken to a nearby veterinary office to be treated and was expected to survive.
The 46-year-old man, from Southfield, was detained by police.
Authorities said the man does have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, but they are seeking charges for unlawful discharge of a firearm causing harm to an animal.
"Well, officer, I was lost and thought I was in Wisconsin. And I couldn't tell what kind of animal it was. I though, maybe it's a feral cat. So I shot it."

I hate Rottweilers.. I think they should be banished from society.

Well I am. I'm outraged that the police detained the man for defending himself against a dangerous animal. I'm also outraged that the dog owner isn't being charged with having a public nusance animal.
There's plenty over by Bed Bath and Beyond, if you want some good hunting.

Just because this pantywaist thought the dog was dangerous does not give him the right to shot it. If the dog was attacking, that would be a different story. I'm fairly certain gangbangers and drug dealers are dangerous, but unless one of these animals is attacking me, I'm not allowed to shoot them.

It does not really matter if it's a beloved family pet. If it gets out and threatens other people or their property, that pet owner should accept the consequences, including the loss of their pet, if necessary.
Rottweilers are vicious, savage, territorial beasts..
Allowing homeowners to have this animal would be the equivelant of allowing homeowners to have a pet Mountain Lion.
If I see a Mountain Lion loose on the street, I wouldn't hesistate to shoot it.

How many of the "Oh that was the nicest dog" stories have we heard, after they ripped a 4-year old child from limb to limb?
They are savage, tempermental beasts, and they don't belong in society.
Dogs don't generally randomly attack unless provoked, or if someone is invading their home territory. Unless the guy was carrying a T-bone in his pocket, I'm sure he could've crossed to the other side of the lot without the dog following him. The dog probably would've gotten hit by a vehicle sooner or later anyway.
A loose 80 lb rotweiler isn't dangerous? 800,000 people are bitten by dogs severely enough to require hospitalization each year.

It was probably growling at him. Do you let the thing bite you before you shoot it? Suppose it has rabies. Don't take chances.
I once had one that thought he was a lap dog. Had one of the sweetest temperments of any dog I've known.
