Good morning all. Senate convenes at 9:30 am this morning, to vote on the nomination of Priscilla Owen. I've started the thread early, as I have to leave for a few hours, but also to give us a place to start commenting early on the events of yesterday....

It will be very interesting to see how many votes she does receive. This hasn't been widely discussed, but if it is indeed 60, or more Yeas, then the whole Dem argument against her, and also in favor of her filabuster, is destroyed.

So, will all 55 Republicans vote for her? I think so. Then how many Dem votes will she get, and especially important, how many of them will be from the gang of 14? I think there will be a few other surprise votes in her favor.

If you want to play "whip" along with us, name the Dem votes you thik she'll receive. Not sure what else is on the agenda today. Other judicial nominees, or will Frist call up Bolton? Will Reid try and gum up things..or try to show he willing to be "bipartisan?" ( yeah, sorry..my bad..stupid question)

Also, of note..in case the Senate starts later, Sen Isaackson is scheule live on C-span 1..the call-in segment, at 9:40 , to talk about judicial nominees. Though I wanted Cain to win the Senate seat, I was very impressed with his comments on the Senate floor during the debate.

Another issue I'd like your thoughts on. Do you think Byrd will retire, or run again in 2006? Passed on his performance, and appearance, these past few days, I think he retires. He doesn't seem to have the stamina.

I'll take that. The 7 Rat signers will cast their vote FOR to show "comity" and "co-operation" with the Mag-miscreant 7.

62 votes.

Well, I think the events of yesterday have shown that at least Dewine and Graham will support the nuclear option this Congress if the Democrat "moderates" resume filibustering. And all we need are two. And McCain has also said that he expects the filibustering to be over now. So, this compromise really was a face-saving exercise after all for the Democrats.

The Republicans are going to get up and down votes on their nominees and we will still change the Rules if they insist on blocking judges using the filibuster. The explosive confrontation has been kicked down the road for another day (if needed).

We are going to come out of this fine, and although it would have been better to kill the Rule yesterday and make it clear that judicial filibusters are not allowed, we now have 62 Senators agreeing not to use them as a routine matter. So in both cases the filibuster is dead.

In the very real possibility that three of the moderate Dems decide in the future to start filibusterin again, they will have stabbed their moderate Republican friends in the back and played them for fools. And that will result in payback.

and, as an added bonus, in the legislative calendar, the impact of the GOP moderates will be severely curtailed. Their colleagues won't be so willing to give into them..
