"Because of Wal-Mart's inadequate wages and benefits, Wal-Mart employees are eligible for $2.5 billion in Federal assistance, which comes from your tax dollars."

All of this could be solved if we eliminated those federal assistance program. Voila. Problem vanishes.

Please elaborate. It is very interesting.

Well, let's see, you eliminate the programs and the people aren't eligible for them anymore. Seems fairly straight forward.

Eliminating federal assistance would also help cut down on illegal immigration!

Let me try. If you are in a job that doesn't pay enough for you to survive, then the obvious solution is not to continue working there but to figure out how to make more money, either through more education, a change of location, or a job search. However, if you can increase you salary at government expense you are encouraged to not move since the ability to change jobs and earn as much as Walmart and the government gives you is very difficult. By staying at Walmart you encourage Walmart to pay lower wages since they have a willing labor pool who will work for minimum wage. Therefore, government assistance does a lot of damage to a community in the long run because they encourage companies to continue paying low wages. Companies like Walmart will raise their employees' salary when they find they can't hire enough people. Salaries are determined by one thing and one thing only: what does it cost to hire the right kind of people to do the job that needs doing. If you pay too little you will not get the number or quality of people you need. Apparently, Walmart believes the salary they are paying is giving them the quality of people they need. I would disagree with that and I don't shop at Walmart because I find their service lousy. But, Walmart is entitled to pay whatever they want, and the employees are free to walk off the job whenever they don't like it. It's basic Econ 101.
