Animal rights activists face trial under terror law

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - New Jersey is using an anti-terrorism law for the first time to try six animal rights activists charged with harassing and vandalizing a company that made use of animals to test its drugs.

Prosecutors say the activists, who will stand trial next week, used threats, intimidation and cyber attacks against employees of Huntingdon Life Sciences, a British company with operations in East Millstone, New Jersey, with the intention of driving it out of business.

The six, members of a group called Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC), are charged under the Animal Enterprise Protection Act, amended in 2002 to include "animal enterprise terrorism," which outlaws disrupting firms like Huntingdon.

If convicted, the group and its accused members face a maximum $250,000 fine and three years in prison.

SHAC argued that the charges are a violation of free-speech rights and it is the victim of a government crackdown on dissent. "This is a frightening step in the Bush administration's path to war on domestic dissidence," the group said on its Web site.

But yet when it comes to killing babies, this group could probably care less and even encourage it!

...

Their tactics included invading offices, damaging property and stealing documents. They also charged with physical assault -- including spraying cleaning fluid into the eyes of employees -- smashing the windows of their homes and threatening to kill or injure members of their families, prosecutors said.

The group also targeted other companies that did business with Huntingdon. Those firms were swamped with telephone calls and e-mail blitzes intended to clog their computer systems, the indictment said.

Other alleged incidents include overturning a Huntingdon employee's car in the driveway of his New Jersey home and the destruction of putting greens at the Meadowbrook Golf Club in Long Island, New York, where some Huntington employees held memberships....

I hope these bastards max out!!! Their tactics as described in this article, are surprisingly exactly the same as used on RNC campaign offices across Our Nation. Must be just a congenital colorectal coincidence of fact, eh? These PETA, ALF, ELF,et al- Organizations are not really organized across a larger spectrum of disrupting commerce by political and personal intimidation- it just seems like it. That the Fed's are NOT charging them with RICO violations, is disgusting, to say the least.

From the article, it seems as if the prosecution is using STATE law. New Jersey has a Democratic governor and legislature, and attorney general. Bush didn't even carry New Jersey.

I have an even better idea, since these clowns all want us to stop experimenting on "animals" why don't we give them what they want ... then we can use them instead!

"Bush didn't even carry New Jersey."

Right. But here's the deal, the drug industry is very, very big in Jersey. We can't tolerate these loons jeopardizing one of our major industries. These people need to do a long stretch of hard time in the big house, that'll learn 'em.

within 200 miles of center NJ contains about 90% of the drug companies of the US. Most of the research is concentrated in this area. For 35 years my company has worked with these companies supplying needed products to assure the well being of the animals used in research. Absolutely none of the people who work with the animals will tolerate abuse or mistreatment of any, from mice to monkeys. Believe it or not most all that work there do so because they love animals. Most have advanced degrees in animal science. Most have a house full of pets. These PETA, etc. are nothing but scum.

Says U.S. District Court - think that means federal law.

Well, "these clowns" are already salivating for the go-light on human embryonic stem cell research. "They" just may be able start the wholesale killing of innocent life, in another horrific way.

I was selected for a jury for a case in US District court some years back. Some guy was caught drunk driving on a military base (don't ever drive drunk on military base!).

From the conversations, seems like the district courts use the state law where an offense occurred. The case I was on used Alabama law but federal penalties.

Vlasak and his wife, the former child actress Pamelyn Ferdin, are both directors of a militant “direct action” Los Angeles group called the Animal Defense League (ADL-LA).
Ferdin herself is the president of SHAC USA, a violent animal rights group described by the United States Department of Justice as a “domestic terror threat.”
And Vlasak has stumped publicly for SHAC, appearing at rallies and protests in support of the group’s “no compromise” plan to rid the world of animal laboratories.
Vlasak has personally been arrested several times for animal-rights-related activity...

As we wrote back in 2003, previous tax records indicated that Nanci Alexander and her ex-husband [see NBA team Houston Rockets] also partially funded the operations of “Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty” (SHAC), one of the most violent groups of animal-rights terrorists ever dragged into court. As part of her divorce settlement, Nanci reportedly won a $150 million fortune, more than a third of which has already gone to PETA and PCRM. As of June 2008, Nanci’s ARF still had over $61 million in the bank. -—Meet the Animal Rights Movement’s Rich Aunt (PETA & PCRM ‘sugar momma’) , Center For Consumer Freedom ^ | October 22, 2009
