N. Korea: Pyongyang Radio Acting Strangely

[Yonhap News, 06/06/05]

Wang Gil-hwan

Seoul -- As of 10am today, N. Korea's propaganda broadcast station, Pyongyang Radio, was transmitting the exact same content they did the day before(June 5th broadcast.)

Pyongyang Radio started its broadcast at 6am(today) with "Good morning fellow S. Koreans, it is June 5th, Sunday, and April 29th in lunar calendar. We are starting today's broadcast now."

It also aired the program schedule for today which contained the exact copy of  Sunday morning broadcast.

Following this repeat schedule, it broadcast 'Kim Il-sung's memoir' at 6:30am, news at 7am, 'With the lofty vision of support' at 7:30am, news at 8am, 'Forum--Our people together with banners high, let us make 6/15 era as the era of unification' at 8:25am, and 'My country with clean air and water' at 9am.

Furthermore, it not only aired the same non-news programs, but also aired the same news content during its 7am, 8am, and 10am news as it did the day before.

It could be a silly technical accident, or a symptom of system falling apart in N. Korea. Or a tip of iceberg for something big. Any of the three is possible.

Actually, it's Memorial Day. Not much to "celebrate."

Re #4

N. Korea celebrates a different set of holidays. A few overlap, but most are different.

You don't have a FReeper profile. Not to be invasive, but are you in North Korea? Are you North Korean?

Its certainly 'Memorial Day' here in South Korea. Its NOT business as usual and everybody in my area (KyongSangBukDo) went out to the cemetery today to pay respects.....!

An interesting find. Could be the NOrth is getting ready for its nuke test.

But something I find interesting. WHile Sunday programming is/was pre-recorded, the Sunday news should not have been. Unless the news was canned non-news and not reflecting events of the day before. It sounds like they record a whole days programming including the news cycle...

But after further thought, it sounds like a glitch, or operator error in inserting the wrong day's programming. A weird country to say the least.

Perhaps it is the old debate about the international date line and they took a stand in the wrong direction!

The radio engineers were our foraging for food no doubt. Put the station's old tape while out to get their day's meal.
